Think you're confusing their current form to how they were at the time of the WC here robo. Barry over carrick made sense then. so did not having richards as he wasnt even close to being the player he is now. ditto about the likes of welbeck sturridge etc.
Gerrard and lampard had to be there then with barry. add rooney and thats 4 out of 6. the only thing was to pick the other 2. he messed up there imo trying to play the traditional 4-4-2 and ending up with the likes of heskey and defoe who shouldnt be anywhere near the squad let alone the starting 11 in a WC.
