I agree with you there Varun. Defoe or Bent did seem to me to be the best choices the partner Rooney, but I'd have given my left leg for him to break away from 4-4-2. If Gerrard wanted to play, he could have been off the striker as he was with Torres for quite a while.

Well, i'l have to disagree then. Barry over Carrick back then made sense to me. Carrick wasnt in the best of form and looked short on confidence. Barry gave them the stability that the team needed.
The main problem was the ridiculous attempt to play the 4-4-2 when clearly well short of a quality 2nd striker to partner rooney. he should have just played rooney up top on his own with gerrard behind him.
Things have changed now though. would love to see either of these depending on the opposition.
