Campbell Strike Not Enough For Reds Youngsters

FA Academy Premier League
Manchester United 1
Newcastle United 1
Trafford Training Ground, Carrington

United's Under18s remain unbeaten so far this season, but they had to battle back from 1-0 down to claim a point on Saturday.

Newcastle, managed by former West Ham boss Glenn Roeder, took the lead on 13 minutes when Andy Carroll scored with a header from six yards out after Phil Cave's cross.

United upped the pressure on the visitors after that, with Fraizer Campbell - top scorer last season for the Reds - watched numerous first-half chances go begging.

The striker, who turns 18 this week, was United's main goal threat throughout and was not to be denied for long.

Six minutes after the interval, Campbell burst through on goal and chipped Fraser Forster in the Newcastle goal to give United a belated but well-deserved equaliser.

Paul McGuinness' side piled forward and should have been rewarded with a winner.

Again Campbell was the focal point of the attack, and had he done better with a shot midway through the second half, the Reds would have clinched all three points.

The Huddersfield-born striker blazed his shot over the bar as the visitors managed to hold out for a draw.

United: Zieler; Cathcart, Chester, Shawcross (Moran, 67), K. Lee; C. Evans (Gibson, 65), Hewson, Rose, Sean Evans, Campbell, Bryan (Derbyshire, 65).
Sub not used: Crockett (GK)
