No Place To Hyde For Reserves
Manchester United Res 4: Rossi (pen) 25, 67, 84, Evans 47
Newcastle United Res 0:
Final Update: 90mins (7pm kick off)
NEWCASTLE Reserves were well beaten by Manchester United's second string on Thursday evening, going down 4-0 at Hyde United's Ewen Fields.
Tommy Craig's young side fell behind on 25 minutes when David Edgar was harshly adjudged to have handled in the box, and Guiseppe Rossi netted from the spot.
Sean Evans gave the Magpies a mountain to climb two minutes after the break, and the impressive Rossi bagged another two goals to complete his treble.
MATCH UPDATES
Chances were few and far between as both side struggled to find any rhythm in the opening exchanges, but it was the Magpies who came closest to breaking the deadlock on 21 minutes.
Martin Brittain swung in a free kick from the left after Alan O'Brien had been fouled by Phil Bardsley, but when Chris Farman rose highest to get a head on the ball, Gerard Pique was well positioned on the line to sweep the ball to safety.
On 25 minutes Manchester United went ahead from the spot after David Edgar was harshly adjudged to have handled when Frazer Campbell fired in a shot from inside the box. Guiseppe Rossi stepped up to beat Tim Krul from the spot.
The home side went close to doubling their advantage when Campbell had time and space on the left to send in a low cross which Guiseppe Rossi just failed to get on the end of with the goal gaping.
Rossi was Manchester United's main threat as the half progressed, and Edgar and Daryl Smylie were both shown yellow cards for fouls on the striker on 30 and 34 minutes respectively.
Krul did well to backtrack and gather the ball under his crossbar on 35 minutes after Markus Neumayr's effort clipped off Edgar and looped over the Magpies' Dutch goalkeeper, then right on the stroke of half time left back Kris Gate did well to block Rossi as he tried to cut in from the left hand side of the box as the hosts finished the half on top.
But two minutes after the restart Krul was picking the ball out of his net again when substitute Sean Evans, on for Kyle Moran at the start of the second half, fired home after a good ball from Rossi.
Gate made another good clearance, this time off the line, when Pique nodded the ball goalwards on 56 minutes.
Newcastle midfielder Daryl Smylie was unlucky not to reduce the deficit on 62 minutes when his 25-yard screamer skimmed the crossbar, and a similar effort eight minutes later had home goalkeeper Luke Steele at full stretch as it flew just over the top.
But it wasn't to be Newcastle's night, and Rossi notched his second and Manchester United's third on 67 minutes when he found the net with a crisp finish from Neumayr's cross from the right.
And the striker completed his hat-trick six minutes from the end with a rising drive from just inside the box after a break down the left.
