For the simple reason that

a) With Vidic signing Rio is not needed in the defense as he was needed in the past

b) Our central midfield is crap and Rio can provide some quality in it

Thats why we need to find a decent option for CM. We have tried Giggs and Smith and both had failed miserably. With Scholes and (guess guess) fortune injured we are running out of options. Rio could solve this problem + if our defenders are half as good as we claim them to be (some claim that Wes is better then Rio) they should be able to live without Rio for a couple of months
