With recovery CD's, I don't think you can make partitions, it just goes ahead and does it automatically and uses the whole drive, though there must be some sort of format going on before it installs the data back onto the drive, I don't think it would just install over it, have a look around when you run the CD to see if there's an option for partitions, if not there's other tools you can use to format the drive first, but have a look for the partition option first

I just had a look there....the first option is to 'Install Windows XP', which I just went ahead a did the last time without looking at the other options, one of which is 'Learn More about the Setup Process'....and looking down through that it gives a procedure for a clean install, formatting and making partitions etc...
