The trouble is that when she or I would press the power button, the fans would start spinning. When u say black out I assume it was a complete power cut ? That being the case its highly probable its blown something. Start with the basics try a different psu, Is power getting to the motherboard ?
Is the HD being picked up in the bios. Unfortunately the processer is very easy to damage in a power cut but u could get lucky I did once.
