They made a feeble attempt to trip him up, and when that failed they didn't do anything to suggest real violence. You are saying that he should have battered them anyway, just so that next time, they wouldn't end up punching him. But whose to say they would anyway?

Defending you rights is one thing, but punching up kids because they act a bit daft is extreme, or at least I think it is. You paint a very scary picture of what kids are like. In reality, not every group of kids want to batter innocent people, chances are most wouldn't. Why retaliate so violently anyway? Surely a word or two would be far better in every respect then resulting to such extremes.
