It has been said before, and it should be emphasised again that Rooney could develop into a "Paul Scholes" like player. (yes, they are different) controlling the game with his wide array of passing, prodding, seeking out openings for the strikers.

Of course, we all know that Paul Scholes started as a striker as well, and then grew and blossomed into a midfield creator.

So it is not really "poor finishing" but as a whole, anyone who could appreciate his play would be able to testify that Rooney brings another dimension to the game.

Who tracks back often? Rooney! wins a tackle, and off we go on the counter. Not an ounce selfish (might be deem as a slight weakness) and finds a team mate with a sublime pass, cross or through ball to set up a goal.

No one can come close to Rooney these days. Yes, if he had been sharper or more deadly, there would be more goals. But, in the end, the contribution as a player to the team, Rooney is always there up on top.
As for this argument, i'd rather he left the tackling to those who get paid to do it, and scores the goals he fundamentally gets paid to do. I'm tired of reading that 'our striker doesn't score, but hey, at least he wins tackles on the edge of his own box'. I never deemed that acceptable from Alan Smith, and i don't think it's good enough from Rooney either (although Rooney is far superior to Smith as a footballer, who is terrible).

The famous phrase is 'Rooney's game is about more than goals'. Well that's great then, but it should be lucky us, we got a striker who can do more than just score goals ( a striker's fundamental job). I would imagine that's what you pay £27m for, a striker who can not just score the goals required, but do the rest too. But surely it should never be a substitute for actually scoring the goals. It's like saying we should spend £15m on Cicinho because he's a defender who is great going forward. If he can't actually defend that well, what's the point.

The frustrating thing with Rooney is i reckon he has it in him to score 20 a season.
