Welbeck played alone upfront against Man City but he had far better support from the midfield in that game than in the 8 matches that went before where he scored only 1 goal.

Stunning performance today. I've said it before, the Academy side is more exciting than the Reserves and tonight we saw a Reserve side made up of predominantly the better Academy players of this season. First half we showed some brilliant approach play but no real cutting edge in the final third. Fair enough however, as we had such a young side playing they weren't always making the best decisions and at times were on different wavelengths. Rodrigo's injury looked bad, it was the way he landed on his left ankle after jumping for a high ball though afterwards the commentators said it "may not be too serious". Newcastle's goal came as a complete surprise and it was a smash and grab lead.

The second half saw the same approach play and guile going forward but with a new found urgency and spark in the final third. Macheda led the line as if he was a seasoned professional, a great ball through by Silvestre found him in between the centre backs and on the shoulder of the last defender...he took a brilliant first touch and then with superb composure he poked the ball past the keeper with the outside of his right foot (very Berbatov-esque). About a minute later, Welbeck found himself with a bit of space and tussled with two defenders, eventually getting hold of the ball again he showed incredible skill by hooking the ball around his left foot with his right and then unleashing a piledriver of a shot with his left foot into the roof of the net. Great goal and amazing close control in the box. Third goal was a result of a beautifully worked passage of play between Welbeck and Eagles with 4-5 one touch passes until Eagles tapped into an empty net.

Great performance, especially the second half. Brady and Galbraith were impressive when they came on too. For me, man of the match has to go to Welbeck who showed determination, skill, finishing and excellent link up play all during the match.
