A Christian nutter (and we have more than a few by the way) would not (quite properly) get away with telling a person that they could not wear a Star of David or crescent.
I don't think your examples corresponds to the story (as I understood it). A more appropriate example would be if a nutter would object someone entering his church with a symbol of another religion. Moreover, in this case we are speaking on the holiest place for Jews, making the issue more sensitive.
