I don't know i never played online on my ps2.
But on the PS3 its very straight forward, wireless and a ethernet port are integrated as opposed to a xbox which for a wireless connection (not sure about elite) you need to buy a adapter. Online play on a PS3 is also free, though not up to the quality yet of a 360 which however you have to pay a subscription for.

If you cant pick up a 60GB PS3 then you could trade your games at gamestation where you would get a deduction from the price for whichever system you decide on.
To get a indication of how much you might get for your games have a look at the cex.co.uk website and check its trade in or cash price for which gamestation will match if you trade with them.
Alternatively you could buy a 60GB PS3 from cex which will be second hand but they offer a 12 month warranty with them.
