Many decent players are good enough to be stay on our bench or at least be in the squad. Dean Ashton is more then capable of being our third striker. He is better than sick note Saha anyway.

Difference is, Carrick was a part of an impressive Tottenham side the season before he joined United. Arguably the most important part of it, he also earned a lot of respect in English shirt. Ashton has been good for West Ham so far, but West Ham haven't really progressed since his arrival and they haven't been a threat for anyone (except us) in the league.
Some may see him as unproven, provided that he hasn't really attracted interest of any team except us (apperently) and Newcastle.
And I don't think we're looking for someone that will be simply the third choice striker and nothing more. The striker we are looking for will most likely play 30+ games a season as a starter and honestly, I don't think Ashton is good enough for that role. He may be good for an emergency striker role at club like United, but we need someone better now.
That's why the names like Benzema and Berbatov are being mentioned.
