Buy the console depending on what games you want,
Generally id say the 360 edges it with the titles released, though if you like your metal gears and final fanatasies, then you might wanna hold out for a PS3.
PSN (ps3's version of xbox live) is free but is no where near as good or as well structured as xbox live; you have to pay for xbox live but I do think you are getting your moneys worth with only £40 a year.
Only the current 40gb models dont play PS2 games, you can fish out an old 60gb model which does have backward compatibility or wait for the 80gb bundles which supposedely do so is well.
Personally if you were to go for only one, id say the 360 based on its current titles and in my opinion, superior online gaming. However if you're clearly a fan of the Sony consoles and the usual titles, then stick with a PS3. Eitherway you'll still get your fair share of decent titles since both formats receive the likes of Call of Duty, GTA, etc and both have very good exclusives (Xbox 360 with Gears of war, Mass effect, Project Gotham, Halo 3 etc and PS3 with god of war, MGS, final fantasy, killzone, Gran Turismo...and so on)
