I think Fergie prefers the 4-4-2, which is when we play our best football, but there is nobody to stretch the defences like Saha did. We were playing our best football at the beginning of last season when we had Saha/Rooney up top, and Ronaldo/Giggs on the wings. That balance, is what we are looking for.
Im sure everyone was in agreeance that a quality centre forward is our exact requirment, and i cant see Fergie (while claiming to be fighting on three fronts) going with Rooney/Tevez/Manucho. Campbell seems to be doing ok, but James Beattie has scored a lot of goals in the first division, we cant quantify how good he is by what he has achieved in a lower league.
It is going to take in excess of 15 million for us to get a striker, who, may or may not develop into the next best thing. Berbatov will cost around the 25 million mark, thats tail end, the guy is begging out to play Champions League football. On top of this he has stayed at Tottenham for two years, he has kept his mouth shut, given them good times, but this is his time, he has got move to a big club, and he looks like he is already half way out of north London. He is also proven in the premiership, and i think he would complete our strikeforce.
Tevez didnt like playing on the bench at West Ham, so why should Berbatov at Tottenham when he is clearly the best player? It came at a time when le Spurs were doing shit, and he wasnt chosen, i would be pissed off, but at Man Utd; where nobody is bigger than the club, then i would keep it quiet and wait my chance, like im sure he would.

'Sitting on the bench and waiting for your chance' doesnt mean that we should bring in a shite striker. Pato was brought by AC Milan for that role, same thing can be said about Suazo while Ole had played in that role for years.
The thing is that you are expecting the club to spend 20m for a 27 yr old striker who had thrown tamtrums whenever he was sent on the bench. That situation is far from ideal expecially considering his age and the fact that we already have two 20m rated strikers upfront. What we need is someone good, who wouldnt mind doing sacrifices for the team and that may also mean, sitting on the bench and watch the SAME STRIKING PARTNERSHIP which got us to the CL final and so near to the EPL title play. No weak forward line would have achieved that. What we need is quality cover and not another 20m rated striker.
