Maybe Carrick is playing deep not because he does it better than Hargreaves, but because he has shown that he is incapable of performing anywhere but deep.
This then becomes a question of not who is the absolute best player for the position, but what makes the team the strongest over all.
If Carrick is a B player as a holding midfielder and a C player in a more advanced role and Hargreaves is an A player as a holding midfielder and a B player in a more advanced role, what gives us more value?
The same rational is lost on many here when Hargreaves slots in at RB. Obviously because Hargreaves can play RB arguably better than our first choice right now it means that he is total shit in the role we got him for. Right? Or maybe it's because we have adequate depth at CM and nobody else on the team that can do a job at RB while Wes has to play CB?
