I know, that was my point.
But (if the story is true) was very close to being discarded for the reasons mentioned. And that was when? Back in the early 90's. Which is precisely my point! Back in those days who ever thought about Athletes taking over? You had fat-chops like Le Tissier and Gasgoine (good luck to him) dominating the game.
What I'm trying to aim at is that players at such a young age are now having their atheltic attributes honed and put to the sword. The smart, naturally talented players are turning into athletes as well.
Soon, in the World Game I mean, they'll have to too. Simply to get ahead.
It's like the diving theory. If they do it, then we probably should to simple even the ledger. If some team's got some uber astro-boots that help belt the ball harder then anyone else - other teams will jump on the bandwagon as soon as they catch wind. Same principle.
Maybe the World Game could become a pocket of resistance though. I would like to see that, because there's something about players like Scholes, the Mark Waughs - the lazy looking bastards that make it look so easy, that's really appealing.
