I read an article in a fairly well to do magazine/website (I can't recall which one now..?) that was talking to the people at SI before the launch of 08.
There were a few things that were amusing, such as Football Manager was quoted in 35 divorce proceedings in the UK, the previous year, as being the main reason for separation.
The guy also said that many of the scouts that the game uses have since been headhunted by large clubs all over Europe. So to think that real clubs may use the database in some capacity is not too far fetched.
I would assume that a club like Chelsea would not use the game as the 'be all and end all' of their scouting system, and purely spend £20+m pounds on a player because he rocks on FM in 2014?
But the database is really just a system of grading players abilities and making informed predictions about how the players will progress, then presenting the findings in a numerical form. It's not really a far cry from a professional analysis system such as Pro-Zone, or the like, which high profile managers (and Steve McClaren) admittedly use.
But in the game I found Tevez a few years back, to replace Paul Scholes in my United side. I hadn't heard about him before then.
