£10m for Crouch shows how inflated English players price tags are. With that in mind, I don't see £18m for Barry as being too unreasonable, especially if you get £10m for a player who could leave for nothing next summer.
I agree with your final point though, I really do not understand why Liverpool are interested in Barry when they have Alonso.
