Brits abroad

why do British players not really "cut the mustard" when they move abroad??
just recently i was trying to think of a British player who it could be said was "successful" when they moved to a team on the continent.
gazza i think was a hit....not that he won anything but in the fact that even the miserable italiens would have to admit that he could really play football.

any other players come to mind who could be deemed a success??
