I've got a similar problem mate, although it has been diagnosed as 'quadricep tendinopathy' - so its where the tendons in the quadricep muscle join with the knee that is causing me grief.

I went and got an MRI scan and all that, saw physio's and knee specialists, etc. First of all I was doing pilates to strengthen the leg muscles for a few months, but didn't notice much difference. Then went to the knee specialist and he got me doing all these strengthening exercises every day which were a pain in the arse. Eventually got some cortisone treatement too which helped, however I think over time the strengthening exercises played a big part.

Now the pain is manageable, doesn't give me much grief when I'm playing, although afterwards my knees are stiff (mainly when I bend my left leg). I need to get back into doing my strengthening exercises on a regular basis, and might go back for some cortisone treatment. Hope it all works out for you mate cause it can be a real pain to get used to.
