Spurs plan shock double swoop

23 July 2008

Andrei Arshavin has emerged as one of Europe’s brightest talents after shining at Euro 2008
TOTTENHAM have made a £25m double swoop for strike stars Andrei Arshavin and Diego Milito.

The Journal understands Spurs are the only club to have matched Zenit St Petersburg's €22m (£17.5m) valuation of Arshavin and are now waiting to see whether he is willing to come to White Hart Lane.

Milito, meanwhile, has already expressed his willingness to sign for Spurs after his current club, Real Zaragoza, accepted a bid in the region of £7m for the 29-year-old Argentina international.

A physical, mobile target man, the terms of Milito's transfer have been agreed for some time, but Spurs delayed on the deal as they hoped to persuade Dimitar Berbatov to stay for another season.

With Berbatov now likely to move to either Barcelona or Manchester United, Spurs have moved a step closer to completing the deal.

Spurs have also retained an interest in Arshavin's team-mate Roman Pavlyuchenko, also a strong centre forward, although any deal may depend on the future of Darren Bent, who is wanted by Everton.

Arshavin was left out of Zenit St Petersburg's match-day squad yesterday (Wednesday) evening, and was expected to travel to meet Spurs officials and discuss personal terms.

The 27-year-old had previously claimed that he would only consider a move to Barcelona or Arsenal, but neither club have made a bid, with the Catalan giants pulling out alto-gether after buying Alexander Hleb.

Spurs, however, have already pul-led off one major transfer coup this summer by persuading Luka Modric sign from Dinamo Zagreb, and are hopeful of completing the deal.

Primarily a second striker, who can play on either flank, Arshavin is seen as a direct replacement for Robbie Keane, who is expected to join Liverpool for around £18m.

The moves for Milito and Arshavin come after Juande Ramos was guar-anteed that all of the monies rec-ouped on Berbatov and Keane could be spent on strengthening his squad.

Ramos is also optimistic that the sale of Younes Kaboul, Teemu Tainio, Pascal Chimbonda and Steed Malbranque will generate enough funds to finalise a deal for Blackburn Rovers' England winger David Bentley.
