I don`t think anyone has any trouble admitting that Ryan Giggs has not been the best player in the Premiership this season.
But, at the same time, everyone will agree that he is one of the very best players ever in the Premiership and a fantastic ambassador for the game. The most bitter scouser would admit that he is deserving of some personal accolade, after all he has achieved and the way he conducts himself.
So when an award like this comes his way- despite him being a low-profile person, who hasn`t asked for this award in any other way than giving his all in 800 games for his club- then you keep quiet and you congratulate him for his fantastic achievments not only this year, but in the past 17 or so years.
Imagine Paolo Maldini winning the FIFA Player of the Year award. I for one, would think that he deserved it and that it was a good person to give it to. Would I think: "Others have been better this year, he received that out of sentiment." - Sure I would, but I`d keep it to myself.
There is a time for raising a discussion about the basis for these awards, and there is a time not to. This past week has is absolutely an example of the latter.
So it just sounds extremely bitter when fans of our opponents start with this stuff days after Giggsy wins his award. The better thing to do would be to keep your thoughts to yourself, and appreciate that one of the games finest ambassadors is making the most of the twilight years of his career and congratulate him for this long-awaited indiviual recognition.
I can honestly say, that if Gerrard goes on to play as long as Giggsy has, and he at that time picks up this award (if he hasn`t already), I`ll be able to say; "Well done, you deserved that" without needing to spill my guts about some other player having a better season.
