There is no western threat against Syria, Afghanistan was due to them providing a safe haven for international terrorism with the same going for Western Pakistan and Somalia, whilst Iraq was the odd one out.
I remember the 2005 Iranian election well as I was in Azerbaijan just before it, Rafsanjani was the favourite to win and was expected to who favoured revitalising relations with the United States, whilst Ahmadinejad came out of nowhere with a surprise, surprise hardline view against the western world, and here we are today.
