They are more powerful in the sense that their large neighbour is no longer a counterweight, and in fact they have deep influence in its government. Everyone in the region is scared of them. Plus Hezbollah, their proxies, are a real force to be reckoned with both militarily and politically.
But yes, they're also unstable, mainly due to Ahmadinejad making such a mess of running the economy.
