Lots of processes that are installed automatically in Windows are actually unecessary. Here's a useful site recommended by the nice people at Sygate security to determine which to turn off..

Scroll down to the table, which shows all Windows services you'll likely find running. Refer to the column 'Safe' mode. This is the configuration you want to minimise wasted system resources (so speed things up) AND for SECURITY reasons to keep hackers and trojans out.
To change settings go to start/run then type services.msc. This brings up a window which allows you to change the setting for each service between automatic/manual/disable. Lots of things you have running automatically you don't need at all. Eveything is reversable and you can always reset to default later if you want to.
