Our chances of progressing to the semis are drastcally improved if Rooney starts. He's our form player for chrissakes.

Should we have ommitted Roy Keane in 1999 to save him for the final?

Quite right. Our (Fergie's) best team only for this one. No point resting anyone if we're not going to reach the final !

It simply has to be that team. It has the tempo that Arsenal couldn't cope with in the first leg. Hit them with that, get our goal and then pick them off on the counter.

We have got to close them down with the same urgency and enthusiasm as last week. Wenger himself admitted to not being able to cope with our speed and tempo. We can't let them play their game this time either. This is why I'd like to see Tevez start this one ahead of Berba, hurry them and do not allow them any time on the ball, they'll get frustrated and make mistakes and we'll kill them.

Good post. This is exactly what we have to do. Exactly like we did last week.

Tevez has to start this game.

Fletcher will be key.

Roberto Rosetti is the ref. He's quite fussy over fouls.

Same here, we must not give them any space and play with a ferocity especially when without the ball. As much as it is about the tempo of our play, we have to be defensively solid and the midfielders are going to be the key to not exposing the defence.

Van Persie playing means Rio has to be at the top of his game. He and Nasri are sweet strikers at the ball so close them down at every opportunity. Fletcher and Anderson are big factors today. And obviously hope that the attackers can conjure up a goal as every goal is a huge step towards the final today. Arsenal arent great defensively and can be got at, we MUST remember this. Yes they keep the ball well but get at them, their defenders are nothing compared to our attackers.

Rooney, Evra & Tevez are all walking a tightrope but we simply must start all three. If we can get ourselves ahead and in a great position then make necessary substitutions. You simply have to take that risk with the three of them, sometimes you need to take risks in order to get where you want to be. I was bricking it thinking about it all weekend but this morning I woke up in a strangely calm mood. Come back to me though at 5pm when I'm leaving work and I might not be so calm then.

He rarely gets it wrong though. Good enough for me.

That cunt face we had at OT had something against Ronaldo.

Rooney won't start. He's on a yellow and Fergie played him for the full 90 at Boro.

VdS
O'Shea-Rio-Vidic-Evra
Fletcher-Carrick
Giggs
Ronaldo-Berbatov-Tevez

Thats how I think we'll play. They're probably going to go 4-4-2 so we can afford to drop Anderson and still dominate midfield. Giggs will offer the extra goal threat and maturity without losing too much defensively.

Personally i would pick:

VDS
O'Steady Ferdinand Vidic Evra
Fletcher Carrick Anderson
Park ------------- Rooney
Ronaldo

But i have a feeling he will go with:

VDS
O'Steady Ferdinand Vidic Evra
Fletcher Carrick Anderson
Ronaldo ---------------- Park
Tevez

2-2 And we're on our way to Rome

not really that nervous about the game tonight, weve hit a bit of form in the last couple of weeks and hopefully will be too strong for them, i think we'll go down there and score and i dont really see us conceding 3 goals

i am however a little nervous about the rooney, evra and tevez yellows, would hate to see any of them missing from the final (presuming we get there) evra would be a huge loss especially if we were facing barcelona, would hate to think of john o'shea having to try and keep messi quiet all night, as good as he has been i think that would be a big ask and theres not really anyone else other than fabio

hopefully we can get a goal in the first ten minutes, and then look to break to kill them off, no need then for any rash challenges which may lead to bookings

We mustn't sit back and invite them onto us.

Arsenal's big weakness is their defence - their strength is their passing game and their speed of attack.

We have to repeat the high tempo, harrying game of last week causing mistakes and panic in their defence and when we get chances we have to take them - we may well pay the price if we waste the quality of chances we had last week.

First goal is crucial - we get it, it should be game over.

They get it - we could be in for a difficult and stressful evening.

Providing Evra and Rio are fit - defence and midfield pick themselves - the only debate is between Berbatov and Tevez and whether or not Rooney is risked.

I just have a feeling that the front three will be:

Ronaldo - Berbatov - Tevez with Rooney coming on if we need a goal.

will be absolutely amazed if Rooney doesn't start. Then again, Fergie's done stranger things, maybe.......but nah.

Even if they get the first goal, not ideal, but doesn't stop us nicking one either. I'm sure that will be the message the players will be given. Don't panic if we lose the first goal. Remember Porto (h) a couple of years back? Then again, if United get the first goal, they have problems. Not that I'll see it that calmly when we're underway.

I have tried not to think about the game this morning and it worked quite well, the morning flew in thank goodness. Now though that it's the afternoon and we're only several hours away, I'm starting to think about it. Different senarios are going through my head and I'm driving myself mental thinking about this. I just want 5pm to be here so I can get out and get home ASAP.

If we're winning and looking safe Rooney off for Berbatov and Ronaldo goe's wide. (Hopfully before 60 mins and a yellow card!)...

Try and get Evra off earlyish aswell, Rafael right back O'Shea to left back. #

2-0 United, Rooney and Anderson :dreaming:

I don't know whether this has been mentioned, but providing that Sir Alex has decided to go with Tevez in place of Berbatov, as the weekends selection would suggest, I would be tempted to start with Ronaldo through the middle for at least the first 25 mins, or so, possibly longer.

The reason for that is two-fold. Arsenal will almost certainly attempt to start the game in a similar manner to United in the first leg. Tevez and Rooney would provide the necessary cover for O'Shea and Evra when Arsenal's fullbacks inevitably attempt to push on and create the overload.

Ronaldo, starting from a central position, should be able to take advantage of the gaps left by one of the two fullbacks. When Arsenal's attack breaks down, Ronaldo can make an arching run in either direction (towards the left flank, or the right), in preparation for a ball played down the sides. Whether he could then get in on goal, or simply hold up the ball long enough for support to arrive, obviously depends on the circumstances.

Now, you may think that it would be easier for Ronaldo to take advantage of gaps left by a marauding fullback if he actually starts in the wide position, but I would disagree. For one, you don't want make it obvious that that is what you intend to do. Even if the fullback is caught up-field, it's highly unlikely that Ronaldo will be left unmarked. It's also much easier to squeeze him out if he starts near the touchline, not to mention that, from the central position, there is a far greater area of pitch to run in to, both with the ball, as well as without.

Ronaldo can also take advantage of any nerves in the Arsenal backline, particularly in the opening exchanges, and pace is likely to give you the best chance of that. And there is also the potential for him to do what he did against Porto.

No Rooney or Berbatov? I think not.

I'm quite surprised at the mass belief that Rooney is not going to start this one. It almost seems like one of those internet hysteria's where opinion becomes fact. It's the only source I've read where he isn't in the starting line-up. Fair enough if he doesn't play, but this is the biggest game of the season and Rooney's our in form, perhaps best player. The team comes first, we'd be risking not making the final just because we wanted Rooney to play in it.
