Well it was a shocking performance, and we got the fuck all we truly deserved.

But before we slit our collective wrists, remember next up we have Villa at home and City are away to Norwich, so only a temporary setback tonight and a kick up the arse for those who thought it was 't already over.

Let's not go overboard with the doom, and just put it down to a one off shocker, until we have better reasons to think otherwise.

This Welbeck was pretty decent when he came on to be honest, but yeah - would've been nice with another option up top in games like this. Not sure how much it would've helped though with the "midfield" we had today.

It was such a collective shocker that I don't think Berbatov would have changed anything. He could have been on the bench though, instead of Park or Pogba.
Perhaps, but I think Berbatov's a superior player to both Welbeck and Hernandez.

He deserves a place on the bench at the very least. Shit, he's probably the freshest man in the squad.

Like I said, we could and perhaps should have found him a place on the bench. Not just in this game but generally. Totally freezing him out seems unwise. But I still don't think he could have done anything about tonight.

A fresh, in-form Scholes could have. But we must rest him sometimes and hope the rest are up to the job. They weren't tonight, obviously.

Yeah I didn't get this especially given we carried on playing the likes of Tevez and Van Nistelrooy even though both weren't in Fergie's plans for the year after. Both Welbeck and Hernandez are inexperienced and out of form, it then places a lot of pressure on Rooney and if he doesn't deliver as tonight we struggle.

Thank you.

True. Although I can understand why Ferguson dropped Scholes out of the squad.

As for Berbatov being dropped completely: Whether he would have made a difference tonight can't be proved or disproved either way. But you're probably right- it was such an abject performance that the difference would probably have been negligible. However, it's inexplicable that a guy of that quality isn't even on the bench at least.

You'd expect us to go for it last 10-20 but when we did we had no threat in the box. Our top scorer had his jacket on and sitting on the bench.

As did our second top scorer.

I don't understand the way Fergie has used Hernandez recently. We know Chico is a goal poacher so why does he insist on bringing him off at the times when a) we need a goal and b) when he introduces more creative players into the side. Hernandez isn't really going to hold the ball up for you on his own, he isn't going to thrive when we have a workmanlike or badly operating midfield behind him so why play him? Its confusing.

Only players with the close control to deal with it in our squad are Cleverley and Scholes. That's scary.

More to do with Nani coming on and giving us proper width.

First post in this thread. Fucking refs are so predictably shit. We're just surprisingly shit sometimes.

Looking forward to the media furore regarding the ridiculous non-corner for their goal...and the blatant penalty we should have got for handball by the Wigan defender in the box.

Oh, wait, hang on a sec...

Wrong tactics and wrong approach completely from the start.

Rooney doesn't tackle anymore. He has to protect his feet.

Our achilles heel. Surprises me that more Prem teams don't do it against us.

The thing is, if we are on our game and passing well, we pull them all out of position when they press hard.

Then destroy them with someone like Valencia or Rooney finding acres of space where a man should have been covering rather than pressing.

It's ridiculous to claim teams don't press against us. Plenty try it. We just usually deal with it by being more clever with possession.

Aye to think Wigan pulled off a tactical coup is insane. Teams have tried and we get behind them and they back off. One bit was missing tonight, our bit.

It was a shocking performance all round really. We played like it was all over and only really kicked in when they scored but by then there was no real momentoum. Everything just seem sluggish and lethargic.

Exactly right, but we haven't played ''really well'' since the start of the season when we scoring for fun, and playing some great football.

We still lack a real leader in the team.
