I could quit Renault, says Alonso

Fernando Alonso has said he can leave Renault at the end of this season.

The double champion, who returned to the team after a stormy year with McLaren, has had a disappointing start to the season in an uncompetitive car.

"I'm at Renault because I wanted to get back to winning, like in 2005 and 2006, if not this year then next year," Alonso told Spanish newspaper As.

"But I have an option to leave so I can be in the best possible car, and it is clear Ferrari is one of the best."

When Alonso signed for Renault last winter, there was widespread speculation that he would only stay for one year before joining world champions Ferrari for 2009.

And his comments seem to confirm suspicions that the Spaniard does indeed have a break clause in his contract that would allow him to leave after just one year.

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo is known to regard Alonso highly.

But the Italian team already have world champion Kimi Raikkonen and team-mate Felipe Massa under contract for 2009.

Signing Alonso would involve finding a way to curtail Massa's contract, which runs until the end of 2010.

But Alonso cooled speculation linking him to Ferrari, saying it was inevitable following a poor start to the season by Massa, who has retired from both races following driver errors.

"It's early to talk about moves and rumours, but Massa has had two bad races with mistakes and that has kicked off speculation," Alonso said.

"It's logical, but it's too early."

With his sharp legal mind and devotion to the sport, he soon rose to the top and was first elected president of the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) in 1993.

Speaking of his role in the FIA and his friendship with Bernie Ecclestone, he once said: "My job as president of the Federation Internationale de l'Automobile isn't paid. But I've done business with Bernie outside Formula One. In property mainly.

"Money doesn't turn me on and I like to think I can leave whenever I want."

Money doesn't have to turn him on—he's already rich. A multi-millionaire, he has a base in Monaco and a £3 million home in London's fashionable Chelsea.

Max Mosley, the president of the FIA, has said that he spoke in German during a sado-masochistic orgy with five prostitutes not because he was fantasising about being a Nazi but because several of the prostitutes involved were German speakers.

However, The Times has learnt that, as part of his legal action against the News of the World, Mosley will argue that he spoke in German only because at least two of the five prostitutes were German and that there was no intention on his part to engage in activity that could be said to have Nazi overtones.

After three days of lurid headlines and calls for him to resign, Mosley is going on the offensive over a scandal that has shocked Formula One and the boardrooms of the car manufacturers who compete in the sport. Since the story broke on Sunday, he has spent many hours speaking to lawyers, assembling a case against the paper that will centre on invasion of privacy and his belief that he was the victim of a set-up. It appears that Mosley will not deny that he took part in the orgy but will dispute the context in which it occurred.

In a letter to all the members of the FIA that is expected to be published today, Mosley claims that he has been the victim of a “deliberate and calculated personal attack” after what he said was a “covert investigation” of his private life and background. “Regrettably, you are now familiar with the results of this covert investigation and I am very sorry if this has embarrassed you or the club,” Mosley said, before adding that he had received a “very large number” of messages of support from people within the FIA and motor sport. These messages had underlined, he said, that his private life is not relevant to his work and that he should continue in his role as FIA president.

“I shall now devote some time to those responsible for putting this into the public domain but, above all, I need to repair the damage to my immediate family, who are the innocent and unsuspecting victims of this deliberate and personal attack,” he said.

While Mosley may have his supporters, inquiries by The Times suggest that there is also widespread revulsion at his behaviour, whether there was a Nazi connotation to it or not. The scandal has been discussed at boardroom level in most of the big car manufacturers and there have been rumours that a statement from several of them calling for Mosley's resignation has been considered.

The impression given by the manufacturers and the Formula One teams is that people are nervous about speaking out, fearing Mosley's wrath at a later date, should he remain in his post. In the meantime, there is bemusement that he has the nerve to continue. As one senior figure in Formula One put it: “How can you have a leader of industry, which is what Formula One is, who is a pervert?”

In the immediate future, Mosley has perhaps wisely chosen to stay away from this weekend's Bahrain Grand Prix, claiming that he is too busy with lawyers to make the trip. There is little doubt, however, that he has recognised that, as predicted by Bernie Ecclestone, Formula One's commercial rights holder, his presence would distract attention from the race and embarrass the Bahraini royal family.

Mosley will not attend Bahrain GP

Motorsport boss Max Mosley has abandoned plans to attend the Bahrain Grand Prix following newspaper allegations about his private life.

The Crown Prince of Bahrain wrote to Mosley on Tuesday advising him not to attend this weekend's race.

In a letter subsequently published by the Times, Sheikh Salman Bin Hamad Al-Khalifa wrote: "With great regret, I feel that under the current circumstances it would be inappropriate for you to be in Bahrain at this time.

"Clearly of paramount importance is the success of the event for all concerned - the Kingdom of Bahrain, Formula One and spectators.

"The focus, quite rightly, should be on the race."

FIA to hold Mosley crisis meeting

Motorsport boss Max Mosley has asked for an extraordinary general assembly of the sport's governing body amid allegations about his private life.

The call for a meeting comes after a frantic day of developments with four Formula One car makers expressing their concerns about Mosley's conduct.

The FIA released a statement detailing Mosley's request for a meeting to discuss the "widespread publicity" surrounding the 67-year-old.

"The full membership of the FIA will be invited to attend the meeting at which the widespread publicity following an apparently illegal invasion of the FIA president's privacy will be discussed," read the statement.

"It is anticipated that the meeting will take place in Paris, and will be held on the earliest practicable date."
