Motorracing other then F1 or Moto GP

Thread to talk about other racing sports.

Tony Stewart just wrapped up the nascar title tied on points with Carl 'i'm a cunt' Edwards. Nascar has a chase system where by everybody is equal up until round 27, then the top 12 drivers go into their own championship 'although still racing everyone each weekend' where they compete for the title. It was brought about to stop drivers just accumulating points rather then going for wins each season. Anyway, Stewart won five of the last ten races 'including the last' to clinch the title in Miami with Edwards coming home second tied on points with Stewart but lost the title on a lack of wins.

I'm still trying to get my head around the new rules for sports cars.

The ACO keep moving the goal posts...

I'm not sure, I can't get my head round them...

I think that basically they got rid of GT1 and replaced it with 2 classes of GT3, one for professional drivers and one for gentlemen drivers, or something, but I'm not sure about that. Its GTP and GTE or something, its confusing.

Pick the bones out of this...

Sports car racing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Then they are talking about how to shoehorn in hybrids etc...

GT1 was becoming ridiculously expensive anyway, and the racing was shit. GT3 is alot more production based, but they still need to adapt the rules to bring the parity back up.

They also need to re-arrange the series. The annoying thing is that the series could run at Bathurst, Sebring, Spa, Le Mans, Nurburgring, and Macau if they organized it properly... imagine that!

Colin Peugot have pulled out of LMP1 all together effective immediately. Really quite sad because that pretty much means that we'll have an Audi 1,2,3 unless Matmut or somebody wants to run the old Peugots.

Toyota are developing their LMP1 but I doubt it will be fast enough this year. It's been 12 years since the GTONE.

Interesting times ahead. Quite frankly, I think LMP1 is probably dead. It's far too expensive. If they adopted LMP2 as LMP1 I think it would be great for the competition. More affordable and there's already the big name in Nissan currently competing. With Porsche looking to come back in and Ferrari sniffing around, we could have a Porsche, Ferrari, Audi, Nissan, Aston, Toyota thing going. Back to the early 90's With Jag, Porsche and Nissan and Mercedes fight.

But they need to penalize the diesels alot more then they have been.

Real shame that, I always rooted for them, would have been great to see a French team win at Le Mans again

Agreed, they clearly have too much of an advantage.

Porsche won't be back in it until 2013, I think. Wouldn't be a bad idea to have an 'experimental' class with hybrids, as at other events (Nurburgring 24hours?) to show what they can do.

The problem with experimental series is that it costs a shite load, and they'll all end up competing with one another anyway at lemans, which will drive up costs. Nurburgring 24hr is alot like the bathurst 12 hr here. Alot of it is gentleman racers so the competition is less frantic.

I also forgot to add Mazda to my early post alluding to the early 90's.

I missed the parade lap of the Mazda last year as I went off into Le Mans town for my pre-race constitutional, but my mate said it was fucking loud!

The cars are too quiet these days, surprisingly enough it's the lower class cars which seem to make the most noise, Corvettes loudest, Porsches quite loud too...

I realise that this says other than Moto GP but i didn't see a recent thread and didn't want to bump an old one. I'm not an avid follower of it but since it is on BBC now and then i watch it.

http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/170520...etirement.html

Anyway on to the news ; Stoner retiring which will be a huge loss to the sport and could see Lorenzo being the next Rossi.

Retiring at 26? I mean fair play because hes achieved what he wants from it but still this strikes me as a bit odd. I wouldn't ever rule out a comeback for someone of his age and quality though.

Also odd that he has announced it now, I mean the season is barely underway.

He's sick and tired of the media constantly undermining his success. I mean half the fuck wits won't even acknowledge that he has Lactose intolerance, just keep calling it a mystery illness. 3 fucking years after it was diagnosed!

It's sad because he's probably the best rider of all time. He came into Moto Gp and absolutely demolished Rossi. Only poor bikes and illness kept Stoner from winning the 08,09 and 10 titles and he still gave it a red hot go on bikes that had no right to win races. People continually slated him for crashing on the duc, and now that Rossi is floundering around, unwilling to push himself or the bike, they media have become ridiculous sympathetic to him (Rossi). I'd be pretty pissed off aswell.

I know your an Aussie but Best rider of all time? Reign it in a bit. For one you cannot compare the 2007/8 Ducati to the 2011/2012, for starters back then it was practically a missle on the straights, now its more in line with the rest. The Ducati needs a certain way of riding it of course but I think anyone can argue that the likes of Yamaha & Honda just produce better bikes at this level now.

But that's beside the point, Stoner will go down as one of the best but will he be remembered by everyone as the best of all time? No, he won't.

There's a Moto GP thread!

On the topic of this thread, it's the Indy 500 this weekend. Would love to see Barichello do well in that.

Stoners been the best rider in the series since his first world title. If he'd been on the Honda or Yamaha he'd have been virtually unbeatable during that time period. Yes the Ducati required a certain style, but as soon as he hopped on anything else, he was quicker than anybody. It was effectively like fighting with one hand tied behind his back and he still managed to get 13 wins off a bike between 08 and 10, that had no right to win races. In comparison since the end of 2006, Ducati riders other than Stoner have managed 1 win, 3 seconds and 4 or 5 third positions. Just shows how utterly dominant and fantastically talented Stoner is.

Which of course I believe comes from his motorcross back ground. I've actually raced at some of the tracks near where Stoner grew up and I can tell you that some of them require the upmost ability to control the bike. 20km long laps that have a combination of sand, clay, dense scrubland and rock at different intervals. Even worse when the weather is somewhat changeable. Going from dry dirt trails to slippery wet clay in a matter of minutes isn't fun.

It was actually nice to see Valentino pushing hard tonight. Too bad he won't do it when the conditions are dry. He doesn't do his talent justice.

Care to elaborate on that, 9 World Championships suggest Valentino's done his talent plenty of justice, him and the Ducati just don't go together.

They should put a little * next to the nine that says seven of those came against virtually no competition. Those seven are like trying to claim Sebastian Loeb is the by far the best rally driver of all time because of his stats.

A Schumacher fan trying to discredit titles won against practically no competition?

Here's me thinking that many consider the likes of Raikkonen, Montoya, Hakkinen, Hill and to a lesser extent Alonso 'car quality lacking' during the time period as quality drivers. All but Montoya turned out to be world champions and if you really want you could throw Jenson Button and Jaques Villeneuve into the mix.

Rossi's greatest competitors were Biaggi and Capirossi and even then, as talented as Capirossi was, got absolutely destroyed by Stoner in 2007.

Rossi after Kenny Roberts Jr stayed with Suzuki, never had to concern himself with battling against other world champions on close machinery 'Suzuki was a pig' until 2006 when Hayden stepped up and beat him.
