Bertie Ahern

You cann't fault him as a politician - has done excellent service to the country from the time he was a young Finance Minister to his recent job as Taiseach.

However standards need to be upheld and anyone lining their pockets with brown envelopes need to be removed from office. FF were quick to distance themselves from Lawler & Burker, looks like they are okay that their leader is okay as he was not dealing in the tens of millions that Lawler & Burker had at their disposal.

Shame on FF and shame on FF supporters for putting up with it.

It amazes me that FF can be in Government for 17 out of the last 20 years. Jobs for the Boys Big Style

I think the culture of the "dig out" is long standing. And if Bertie had come clean at the beginning without the half truths, it would have been better for him.
Actually his second in command BIFFO (Big Ignorant F***er from Offaly) Cowan is also damaged goods. He is Finance Minister and his brother is on latest list of tax dodgers.
I kinda like Bertie......met him a few times and he even bought me a coca cola once. I probably should declare that as a "gift" on a tax form..........anyway he talked a lot about United (my son was wearing a United top)..hes a genuine fan........and its well known fact all Manchester United fans are great people.
Ooops Id forgotten about Eamonn Holmes.

I can't believe anyone would have any sympathy for bertie, talking about "dig-outs" when he has one of the best paid jobs in the country. He's been caught now, why is he still in power? What does it say about us?

We have the same issues this side of the Irish Sea regarding curruption, the question is though for both Dublin and London is how far deep and widespread is it?

Best of luck to him. Im sure when it all comes out in the wash he wont be found guilty of anything seriously incriminating. Helped bring peace to our little island and deserves alot of credit. For that alone I say Thanks Bertie!

Come from a Long FG Family who have never voted once Voted FF. But have come close to siding with Bertie on many an occasion. His role along with many many others was immense.

Good Luck to him. I think it will be hard for him to come out of this clean in the long run.

I hope FF self implodes now

I don't believe it! Well, he had to go.

I agree that if he had stayed it would've insulted the political system. Who do you reckon will replace him? I think it has to be biffo, who I like despite his severe case of uglyness.

Alas poor Bertie......

Last election was in May 2007 so none need take place for a few years, unless FF coalition partners, the Greens and the Pee Dees pull the plug on FF and support FG in a vote of confidence which FF could lose.

Whoever gets the job (Biffo Cowan) will rely on the fact that this is the government for which the people voted which is convincing (ie subtext is if we fought an election we would be crushed)
FG will say ......ah but its a false mandate based on the fact that the people believed Bertie last year and now hes "proved" to be a liar.
And thats convincing also.

So while FF and FG folks will be putting these arguments and finger pointing on Prime Time and in news bulletins tonight, its all a bit sterile as only the Greens and Pee Dees have really got the "power" to pull the plug.

Odd that the two premiers (Blair and Ahern) are scheduled to hand out the prizes at Queens University Belfast in July to the likes of yours truly and both are mired in sleaze......Blair cash for peerages and Ahern for cash for whatever.
Yet "Northern Ireland" will be writ large in their legacy and for that Im grateful and so (without realising it yet) are my two grandsons.

Yet I suppose the difference between Blair and Ahern is ......Iraq.

What I find disconcerning is that politicians every where are coming out saying what a good man he was and that he will be missed, I am yet to see a significant comment saying that it is right he should go.

To be fair though, as many in this thread have said, he led ireland very well when he wasn't lining his pockets. Politicians have to say he was a good man because he is denying any wrongdoing and is therefore innocent until proven guilty.

I can tell you, hand on heart, that a lot of the barristers are going around town saying things they shouldn't, and exaggerating the amounts etc for the sake of a good story. A lot of stories are doing the rounds etc, but it does seem as if there was a smoking gun lying in wait, and he chose to kump off before it got that far.

Let's hope it affects the sales of Cecelia Ahern's books. She has improved but her first one was dire, as was the film it spawned. I doubt it would have made it into print if she wasn't who she was.

But that's OT. Sorry.

I quite liked dear old Bertie tbh.

I'm happier with Brian Cowen than Bertie. Hopefully there'll now be less waffle and stronger leadership.
