European Parliament votes against anti-piracy laws.

Quote:
A strong majority of MEPs (663 against and 13 in favour) today voted against the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), arguing that it flouts agreed EU laws on counterfeiting and piracy online.

In addition, the Parliament's decision today states that MEPs will go to the Court of Justice if the EU does not reject ACTA rules, including cutting off users from the Internet "gradually" if caught stealing content.

Though MEPs cannot participate in the ACTA talks, without the consent of the European Parliament, EU negotiators will have to go back to the drawing board and come up with a compromise.

Four MEPs from across national and party lines - Alexander Alvaro, Stavros Lambrinidis, Zuzana Roithova and Françoise Castex, dubbed the four ACTA musketeers - have launched a petition against the agreement, which has collected 31 signatures so far.

NGOs, academics and trade bodies that have studied leaks from the trade talks say the agreement would pave the way for network providers to introduce "US-style draconian" ways to penalise piracy.

Interestingly, of the 13 who voted in favour of the new bill, 8 were from the UKIP.

Surely if they're talking about the internet being a fundamental 'human right', they wouldn't be allowed to cut you off from it?

It won't become a human right because it isn't a part of the European Convention of Human Rights, i.e. our Human Rights Act, which the Conservatives have said time and again they would scrap it and start again as it is so often used anti-socially rather than for the protection of rights.

I don't think the article is very clear. To clarify, MEPs are protecting internet users. They have defeated a bill which would have allowed users to be cut off for piracy.
They have prevented 'draconian measures' (from one point of view anyway) from being made law.

Though such laws are being proposed in London, and there is no credible human rights protection to prevent it.

ISPs should no more have to police what their customers do with their connection than phone companies do. If there were affordable ways of downloading then people would use them and the problem disappears.

I think its disgraceful that a law designed to stop people illegally downloading films tv progs music software etc is stopped/delayed. These download hooligans should be hung drawn n quartered THEN banned from using the Internet.

I will suggest to the authorities that they investigate certain caffites who have practically admitted doing these vile practices and that they should start by examining the posts of that anti religion, extreme lefty, Caff bully and Oz loving thug Wibble

The likelihood is that if laws are designed where your ISP can drop you on the basis of illegal downloading then no other ISPs could take you on leaving you on a blacklist.

Haven't seen a new thread about this or any other post. It's seems that they've managed to accomplish something close to SOPA/PIPA but on a global scale.

At least the American congress would have a proper mandate.
