I wouldn't pay much attention to his apparent appearance. The Utoya shooting seems like a particularly horrible twist. My condolences.

BBC seems to be all over the Muslim terrorist angle. At the moment that seems very premature, or outdated.

Heh... today for me was supposed to be a day where I was going to be with child services and foreign directory colleagues in a house that's meant to be the home to a bundle of Afghan kids, who we're going to stay with and act as aides and parental-ish figures for, after them having received papers that they're granted a stay in Norway. There had been a local paper article recently where some neighbours were concerned about a intake for refugees being in their neighbourhood, which is a false fear as they're not refugees at a half-way home. This is to be their new home where they're to have a chance at integration and education, as well as whatever good experiences of Norwegian life we could give them.

The bombing happened an hour or two before people were to come in (no RSVP, we'd just tossed invites in their mailboxes), nobody showed... I wonder how many were stuck in front of their televisions?

I just hope there's no xenophobic fall-out to this... at least not visibly and politically or socially. I hope we come out of this showing our true, tolerant and non-prejudiced colours.

I thought Stoltenberg's comments to the news were very aptly chosen.

It will certainly interesting if this is a Norwegian targeting Labour...

Yup. I'd much prefer it to be that rather than terrorist attacks.

Was the event you spoke about in Vartdal?

PM speaks now.

Just got in and heard the news. For fuck's sake, what a disgusting attack. I'm hearing conflicting reports at the moment - is it known yet who/what is responsible?

Seeing footage of the bodies floating in the water is sickening.

They'd be stupid to try to take advantage of such a tragedy, and I don't think even they are dumb enough to do something like that. At least I hope so.

Police have apprehended a Norwegian, so it's unlikely it's got to do with Islam.

That's bizarre. You would assume that an attack of this size would be an organised effort. If a lone nutter was responsible, it's kind of scary that one man can do so much damage.

Police confirms that the same perpetrator is behind both attacks, according to NRK. This is more than likely one lone looney, targeting the government or Labour. Fucking hell, that's fucking crazy. I need a drink.

Indeed, but I doubt he was solely responsible. And if he was, he must've had some experience with explosives, maybe from the military or something like that.

Seems he/they was/were trying to make a political point, targeting the government and a Labour party youth camp. Either that or he was religiously motivated, and the two targets is just a bizarre coincidence, which doesn't seem likely.

There is absolutely no reason to suggest it is religiously motivated, unless you have the preconceived belief that religion is the root of all evil.

Picture (be warned):
Spoiler

I am not 100% sure what this image is showing. He might be a police officer. But I am fairly sure the police that went to the island were of the special forces variety. That guy isn't exactly dressed like that? I don't know.

Also unclear how many of those shapes are actually people.

Wouldn't rule it out.

And no, clearly religion is not the root of all evil. It'll have to settle for "a lot".

I hope this idiot was a military trained bomb builder, because if this is something he just found on the internet... well that makes it more scary.

Highly probable the number of deaths at Utøya will rise, according to the police.

Nah, Ørsta... moved there. Vartdal's a bit too out of the way for such a housing project... by Sunnmøre standards I mean, I know full-well Sunnmøre in its entirety is out of the way.

I just arrived home and saw it on the news, alongside a mention of some Islamist group, so I just assumed it probably was religiously motivated. If it isn't, then you have to wonder just what the feck motivated this person(s) to do what he/they did, among other questions. For starters, where the Hell does a lone nutter get a machine gun?

Yes, some Islamic group. But it's improbable that the man in custody has ties to them.

I remember when many thought that over the FBI bombing in Oklahoma. It was a couple of days before it was clear the assholes were homegrown.

Anyway, fuck this. What did Norwegian kids do to deserve anything like this? If I had to guess it's a deranged gun-nut death metal thing.

RIP innocents.

I've read the arsenals of some of the Norwegian bikers are ridiculous. I read at one point they had rocket launchers from an armory they raided way back when (this would be from a very dated article now).

PRESS RELEASE: Dr. Terry Jones - Response to Terrorist Attack in Oslo, Norway | Stand Up America

It's very strange, in some ways I am "happy" that this has all the signs of domestic terrorism. It obviously angers me greatly that a Norwegian could do this to a bunch of civilians, most of them just kids, but at the very least this will not in the end fan the flames of the right-wing xenophobia.

When I was in Exeter there was a white English guy from Plymouth that had been taken in by this fundamentalist nonsense. He became completely devout and eventually he tried to bomb a restaurant, thankfully he was clearly too slow to even manage that but all the same he had an actual nail bomb. It wouldn't surprise me if this Norwegian was a convert who had signed up to the extremist doctrine.

We have an election coming up. If this is muslim terrorism it could help lead to a FrP government, and that would hurt us immensely. I absolutely hope this is a Norwegian with a sick mind.
