Israel celebrates 60 years of independence

Israel's independence day celebrations start Wednesday at 20:00. Today, Israelis bow their heads in memory of the 22,437 fallen IDF soldiers and terror victims who have paid the ultimate price for the re-establishment of a Jewish state in the modern era.

Well done. Many congratulations on your fine country, its great people, and most especially the lovely food. You need to export more of it.

Cheers, Spin.

I'm not too sure about the people here being "great", but let's not ruin the party on this special day. I also think that the lovely food you are talking about is not Israeli (unless Israeli Arabs make Arab food partly Israeli). In fact. I don't think there is anything like "Israeli food".

Fortunately Haifa is famous for both it's Arab restaurants and Jewish-Arab co-existance. Possibly the best falafel in the country, and there is this place where they sell absolutely wonderful baklawa...

Hmm... I think you're selling your own cuisine too short. It's definitely different from other Middle Eastern food, sometimes because the original Middle Eastern recipes have Eastern European / North African influences.

Of course, I've not actually had proper Israeli food because you lot refuse to let me in but what I've actually tasted is pretty interesting, and different too. Savoury kugel with tahini was the most memorable, but that might be an abomination unto the Lord, so maybe it's not the best example.

Itīs a little wonder that Israel survived already 60 years. What a achievement.

Congratulation. I want to visit Israel soon, so I hope you will hold on for many years to come.

Don't delay your visit for too long, because we can't guarentee another 60.

Your only a minor surgery away from becoming a citizen, let alone getting in for a visit.

Kugel with tahini sounds as horrible as a food combination can be, but each to their own. As you say, we have some great food here, but it's mostly ME, N African or E European cuisine that reflect the many countries Jews have immigrated from back to their homeland over the last 120 years or so.

Almost as horrible as pickled eggs with bread crumbs. Good thing we kicked those Brits out of here.

Matboucha

Israeli innovation = adding aubergines, or something

This must be worthy of a Nobel prize?

Do you really like kugel and all that stuff, Spin?

I don't really rate all that Polish/East European fare much. Comfort food, not much more. The quality Jewish food is the Sephardi stuff, Portuguese and North African.

Good call, though I'm not sure about the Portuguese contribution there...any particular dishes in mind?

How about remembering also the British soldiers who were killed to get it.

Prime Minister Clement Atlee,in reference to the King David Hotel bombing:
Hon. Members will have learned with horror of the brutal and murderous crime committed yesterday in Jerusalem. Of all the outrages which have occurred in Palestine, and they have been many and horrible in the last few months, this is the worst. By this insane act of terrorism 93 innocent people have been killed or are missing in the ruins. The latest figures of casualties are 41 dead (NOTE: became 91), 52 missing and 53 injured.

It is so very easy to claim that only the Palestinians use such methods.

Well... Kugel is pretty tasty, resembles mac and cheese, which I've always liked as comfort food.

You may find it harsh and I'm sure will be outraged, though I cannot see how the British Prime Minister can attend a celebration of the State of Israel when we forced out by terrorism, whilst the future of Israel and Palestine is far from consolidated- and would be better for him to stay away and show the Palestinians he has no bias towards them.

Never tried kneidlach - are they the chicken fat dumplings?

Latkes are great - battered, flattened chips, which you can use to make the best chip butty ever.*

* but chip butties pale next to a good kebab. I see what you mean.

Not sure how you make them, but yes they're dumplings. I think they're Czech.. or at least, they have the same thing there, called Knedlich

They taste like disintegrating wet cotton
