Worst kept secret in politics today but good all the same.

Ken can be commended for dignity with which he spoke and equally i think that some outsiders will have been surprised by the more serious Borris.

I can't actually believe it's happened

I laughed out loud when he first said he'd run for Mayor...

Yeah, me too. It was a similar laugh to when I heard Schwarzenegger was running for governor of California. The major problem with democracy is that a lot of people are idiots.

I think idiocy is less the problem than the fact that people vote tribally, superficially, emotionally, lazily, whimsically... the same way we do most things. Thinking things through is a pain in the arse, it's not that most people can't work out what's in their or the country's interest, it's that they don't bother.

Much obliged.

You know you sound as bitter as the inverted snobbery from callers on the BBC complaining about Borris' sister Rachel Johnson [who came on and gave an interview], for having the nerve to be at a celebration party with champagne of all things. Oh what a crime!

Has he done so very badly for the state?

Until they put into office someone who shares your mindset and politicla view, is that it?

Such comments as those make you out to be ten times the snob that Labour votes have accused Borris of being.

No they don't have to necessarily share my views, but voting for a cartoon character is a pretty stupid thing to do. As is voting to 'teach someone a lesson' or any other such reason.

What if they were supportive of his manisfesto pledges? And thought that Ken was no longer any good for London?

These thigns cannot be possible simply because it is Borris or a Tory?

Tell me, how closely have you been following the mayoral contest, what the candidates are offering and the record of the incumbent?

I think the amusing thing was the interview with his father who said all politicians should be well versed in the classics and that understanding ancient Greece was the key to running London........should have shown the interview before voting not after.

still he will manage to screw up London......so I spose I am glad he got elected. cos I hate the place.
still i hope he doesnt do anything drastic before i go there for a break in two weeks.

I have to confess to agreeing with that bit

But then, I think everyone should be educated in the classics... it's a losing battle I admit

Oi - some of us live here. In fact he won't be allowed to do nuffink since he will be completely subservient to getting Cameron in next time.

Being a classicist more than a politician was Enoch Powell's problem, too

Close enough to know that for all Ken Livingstone's faults, he's not going to be worse than this clown.

Inability to control the words that come out of his mouth, this tends to cause problems for a politician. Big problems given time and a degree of power.

He also engages in tokenistic politics of the worst kind.

And he's overly fond of newts

I remember this being aptly highlighted by a tabloid headline in the eighties:

BAN THIS NEWT-LOVING EXTREMIST

So you know the man, the personality, a few headlines, but not mayor himself year in and year out on a city level.

Not aware of issues such as when he went to war for all intents, with my borough council [who have little enough money somehow] over the sale of an underused recycling centre.

Or his support for planning orders liek these and others like them that would harm the city :: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/1868426.stm

Overseen improvements to an Underground network that if it was tested in a court, would probably be found to be discriminatory to the disabled.

When was the last time you tried to catch a bus in central London, you walk quicker along the pavement than they move along the road.

Consulted residents over the eexpansion of the congestion charge and then proceeded to completely ignore them. Not to mention the price rises and pledges over crime which leave a lot to be desired.
