And to think, this could have happened 11 years ago when no one knew who he was.

I was listening to Fisk speak and he was saying that Bin Laden had something about him that unified people. With him gone hopefully it will destabilize the organization. If the US took out a lot of top dogs within then there will be a power vacuum and factions may form - which could lead to in-fighting.
That's the key. It's not like Al Qaeda's going to disappear all of a sudden, but if troops can capitalize on the destabilization, they can make a pretty huge dent. That said if there's infighting, hopefully nobody innocent gets caught in the crossfire.

That will be the most interesting and difficult part going forward. While Bin Laden definitely did not plan many of the actions of Al-Qaeda or other similar organizations, he was definitely a figurehead for their movement. I can see it hardening their resolve or damaging their confidence. I would imagine that Ayman al-Zawahiri or the American-Yemeni cleric Anwar al-Awlaki will make a statement/threat sometime in the next few days if they can manage it.

Security will definitely be stepped up around the world for the time being.

So while Trump and Co. were frothing at the mouth last week about his Birth Certificate, Obama and his people were busy finalizing information on Osama...

Been a dream week for Obama, shame about the storms killing hundreds, otherwise I think he would have busted out a couple of dance moves.

He bombed two American embassies before 9/11 happened, it was well established who he was

From what I've read, Osama had become merely a figurehead for al-Qaeda and the like. If the current leaders manage to keep everything in order, who knows what could happen.

Just like 9/11 unified the US, this significant but structurally ineffective event could strengthen the resolve of terrorists.

Hopefully not.

EDIT: Spookily similar to Sir Matt's post on the previous page...

The average age of the people outside the White House is somewhere between 18-24, most likely kids from Georgetown, George Washington, and other universities.

I had this, though it's less appropriate given he was killed in a firefight and not an air strike:

Nowhere, seeing as nobody sells a Union Flag, supplied on a full size flagpole.

Yeah don't think there was too much emphasis on the alive bit. No one wanted that fucker on trial.

What a media circus that would have been...

What's the difference between Osama Bin Laden and a Frank Lampard shot?

Bin Laden was caught...

Yeah, he's definitely been less important in terms of actions and planning, especially since Al-Qaeda isn't really an organized unit. I do think it could shift the importance from Afghanistan-Pakistan to Yemen. The unrest there could definitely benefit al-Awlaki and Yemeni-based terrorists like those who sent the printer cartridge "bombs" in the past year.

He reached a mythic status though over the past decade so he's still figuratively very important to the terrorists across the Middle East and world. It should be a chance to push on and attempt to decapitate the organization further.

Edit: Dammit, didn't see RK's edit.

After the Embassy bombings and the USS Cole bombing, his name was known. It wasn't at the forefront of everyone's mind, but he was all over the news. You couldn't get a random informed teenage off the street and quiz him and get the name from him, but if you mentioned it to a decently informed citizen, there would've been at least a hint of recognition.

Of course 9/11 brought him to the forefront because everyone was angry, but it's not like he was a relative unknown before then. Just after the attacks when his name was brought up as a possible suspect, people recognized the name and knew the implications.
