Pram falling off the side of a platform

Pram rolls into path of train | The Sun |News

Could have been tragic!! The video also highlights how ignorant mobile phones make people. That guy could have prevented a tragedy, but was totally oblivious!!

Is he really the one to be pointing fingers at here? Why's the pram rolling toward the edge of the platform unnoticed in the first place?

You normally point them sideways to the danger.

Exactly, what's the mother doing in this?

That guy's minding his own business, not looking out for runaway prams.

The guy on the phone should take no blame for this, he is incapable of seeing the future therefore he didnt know if the pram would fall off the edge, he has the right to enjoy himself with the things he buys however the parent is a total disgrace and should realise that their child is the most important thing, an eye should be kept on the child at all times.

You'd think that the Australians might have, in all of these years, worked out how to make artificial surfaces level.

I dont see what the guy did wrong to be honest , he was minding his own business on his phone something which I suspect many of us have done.
Not his or anybody but the mother's job to look after the pram.

Whoever owns/operates that platform can count themselves lucky the baby didn't come to any serious harm. Having a sloping platform leading onto a railway track is absurdly negligent.

Ah, the yellow painted line should have been sufficient to stop any such incident...

But yeah, what Weaste said is right, you put a pram sideways on at the roadside or on a platform. And put the brakes on. And keep an eye on your kid rather than daydream about god knows what.

Take a moment to think about why they might not make the platform level.

To prevent wheelchairs and trolleys from rolling onto the path of the train?

Aaaah. To prevent pools of stagnant water on the platform. But don't platforms have a roof? Whatever residual water that falls on the platform can be drained by sloping the platform AWAY from the tracks.

EDIT: atleast that's what we have here in Mumbai and we get badass monsoons.

It never rains here so why would we need drainage?

It has rained here all but about 2 days in the last month. RIvers in Qld are up to 14 meters above normal levels. We once had 96cm of rain in 24hrs, half of that in 2 hours. When it rains like that drains just don't work.

I'm not sure it's the stagnant water so much as to stop water pouring down whatever stairwells might be around and flooding lower levels of the station.

I guess they could slope the platforms away from the tracks towards drains built along the length of the station wall but they could get blocked with detritus and fail when you need them most. Must more effective to tilt the platform slightly to drain the water onto the tracks.

We get sustained levels of heavy rain. Gutters get blocked etc. This is compounded by the fact most suburban stations tend to be quite leafy in melbourne and Sydney. In Sydney apart from places like Redfern and Strathfield 'closer to the city', alot of the outer suburbs are in those kinds of places.

They normally have those elevated dots where the white strip is so i'm not sure why they're not there.

I checked the slop on the stations on my way to work. Marginally sloping towards the track. You're right.

Melbourne gets an average precipitation on 26 inches in a year. Mumbai gets close to 96 inches.

But that points been proven. Pogue wins.

Just out of curiosity, how often does it rain for days straight? Or is it mostly afternoon showers with the occasional monsoon?

Btw this is what I mean by those elevated dots. No idea why they're not on that platform

Days straight, mate. Flooding atleast 3-4 times during monsoons. There is only so much a drainage system can handle. These 96 inches are spread over 3 months only. I hate it.

Just out of curiosity, have you ever traveled to any country which experiences monsoons?

I've been to tropical north queensland during monsoon season and that's ridiculous amounts of rain aswell. Never been to anywhere else during Monsoon season though.

Lovely. You should come up to Bombay once during the monsoon. Beer on me.
