I think he could be very good in the future, not world-class but very good

Only young German defenders with world-class potential that I can see are Di Gregorio and possibly Petereit and Cimen

What are the rules that let one player in the list?
I am puzzled, almost all the best young italians are not in, i.e. Pirlo, Cassano, etc.

The rules:

- the player was born in 1981 or onwards, meaning Pirlo, etc, are out

- Players who are already considered as stars and playing regularly for big teams, i,e Roque Santa Cruz, Cassano, etc are out as well

Has Darren Fletcher really progressed as much as United thought he would? I know he had the injury last season, but it just doesn't seem like he has exploded onto the scene really.

As a sidenote, I am thrilled to see the future Portuguese national team midfield and strikers on the list. They are great, I just love their style. But, as someone mentioned earlier, is there a lack of Italian talent in this age bracket?

Fletcher was injured for over a year, of course that has slowed down his progress.

But he'll still make it, don't worry, he's just a giant.

Re: lack of Italians...mmm...there are a few players who came close...Alex Pederzoli of Juventus, Alberto Aquilany of Roma, Marco Ferro of Pistoise, Gaetano Grieco of Fiorentina (I think...).

There are 3 Italians in the list: Lodi, Brighi and Donati so that's not little.

The Italian youth teams haven't set the world alight.

Their U-16 team failed to qualify to the QFs of the Euro U-16 (best players were Lodi, Aquilany and Pederzoli), their U-18 team also failed to qualify to the U-18 Euro while their U-20 team was crap in the Toulon tournament (Ferro being the only bright-spot) so I don't think there are many who I have missed out.

Also most good Atalanta/former Atalanta youngsters are about a year too old to make the list ...

Must admit I thought he was born 1980 but now I see he was born 1981, he's not a bad player actually, maybe I will add him.

I think Kim Källström is a bit too low on the list, he will be in the Swedish WC squad for sure and an incredible talent. Hadn't it been for the current U21 qualifying games I'm sure he would have played today for Sweden. I agree with your points on Zlatan; he is very talented but he needs to adapt more to a quicker and rougher game. He is doing OK for Ajax but he didn't make much impact in the game today.

I tend to agree with your assessment of Kallstrom. He's superb. Moved him forward to #14.

I think Roy fails to recognize the talent from the young US players. Chipper's defence has been pretty weak this year but then again he is there to attack and he does that very well. A class act, but he needs to get his ass over to Europe soon to develop that talent of his. Put him in somewhere low on the list Roy, just so we can see that you care about the US players!

I'm not sure about Mark Fotheringham in the list. He's definitely not the best youngster in Scotland. Promising yes, but not in the same class as Stephen Hughes (Rangers), Kevin McNaughton (Aberdeen) and Jamie McCunnie (Dundee Utd).

I've been getting contrasting information.

One mate whose opinion I usually respect has told me McNaughton is average and that Shaun Maloney is class. Do you agree?

Also, Stephen Hughes will probably make the list too.

Well Maloney is class. He disappointed when he came on v Rangers and in the testimonial v Man Utd, but when the pressure's been less - such as in the U-21's and v Stirling Albilon last week (he scored 4), he's performed very well.

Aberdeen have quite a few impressive prospects and McNaughton is probably the best one, I'm not sure whether he'd make your top 100 though. IMO Hughes is the best Scottish youngster, he hasn't let Rangers down at all this season. Stephen Simmons (Hearts), Maurice Ross (Rangers), Mark Kerr (Falkirk) and Zurab Khizanishvilli (Dundee) are all worth a shout.

In Swedish paper Aftonbladet they have a short article today about Zlatan being ranked among the top 10 young players in the world by the "highly rated of football site footballtransfers.net." What about that Roy?

Those of you who master the Swedish language can read more about it below:

Didn't know that but not surprised at all.

Always thought he'd turn out a good player, since I saw him in the flesh 3 years ago. Well-built, good passer, great shot, can tackle, good in the air, the complete central midfielder.

Recommended him and Quaresma to Leverkusen but did they take my advice? did they fuck...

Naaa, he hasn't a place there. I've brought him on in one of the older CM games for RANGERS and while I got youngsters through, he never had a chance.

Probably dumped him to Preston like we do in United.

For christ sake Roy, three years ago? You were recommending that two 14 year olds be ripped from their homes and sent to a far away country. You evil man, good for Leverkusen for ignoring you .

Rumours have it the club didn't take Roy's players on because if they had 5 of his 'fledglings' in a line up they had to change their name to Leiberkusen.
