Does anyone have any information on Ben Collett? He won the Jimmy Murphy award last year but never seems to get a mention when people talk about players they think will make it. From the bits of him I’ve seen, he looks a class finisher with great vision.

Broke his leg badly in the final reserve game last season and just made his comeback about a month ago, which IMO is why he won the award over the likes of Eagles last season. Hes a hard worker and whether or not he will make it depends on how he progresses now that hes recovered from his injury. He is still very lightweight.

England U17 lost out to Portugal for 3rd spot in european championship, 4-4(2-3 on penalties).
United striker Fraizer Campbell missed some chances, but did draw a penalty with one run.

BTW France won the final 2-1 over Spain.
The two french attackers who have both been linled with United got special praise from the spanish coach- "I want to congratulate France as they are a great team, and if I had the money, I would buy Jérémy Menez and Ben Arfa immediately. They are both extraordinary players for their age and are technically very good. They were so important for France."

I think Mads Timm has been flew back to Manchester after his hamstring problem from the last match. I'm not sure since there is a newspaper strike over here in Norway. Anyone who's seen Timm in Machester?

btw: Viking drew again at home

Don't worry, Sveroa, you won't be relegated...

Seriously, you've got yourselves a new stadium at the right moment and most likely you'll be pushing for at lest an uefa place consistently from now on. Good for you. At the moment you look shite, though.

Hope not. Let's just Timm back in a hurry, and sign Roy Hodgson as our new manager. If these two factors become true, we will some asses at June 26th

Accident update From MEN

Marsh back on the mend

MANCHESTER United youngster Phil Marsh is fighting back to fitness just four months after a horror car accident almost killed him near the Reds' Carrington training HQ.

And United have said thank you to the North West Air Ambulance Service with a cheque for £2,500 for their swift reaction to the emergency back in January.

The 17-year-old Academy forward was a passenger in a car driven by fellow youth team member Callum Flanagan that was involved in a head-on collision with a Ford Fiesta driven by a woman on Carrington Lane, Ashton-on-Mersey, close to United's training complex.

Marsh, who had appeared as a substitute along with Flanagan the night prior to the accident in United's FA Youth Cup win against City at Old Trafford, was severely injured when the car overturned. He suffered a broken left leg and broken left shoulder blade and had to be cut from the wreckage.

Within minutes of the crash he was airlifted by the Air Ambulance Service and treated on board their helicopter by a doctor and ambulance technician as they flew him to Wythenshawe Hospital.

But Marsh is now on the mend and aiming to play again next season for the Reds Academy side.

"The Air Ambulance crew were superb and I really appreciate what they did for me. They were the difference between life and death as they got me to the hospital so quickly," said Phil.

Worried

"I do recall thinking very early on whether this would finish me as a footballer. I was worried that it might end my career.

"I was treated at Wythenshawe Hospital for eight days and they were terrific as well. They put my mind at ease fairly early about playing again."

Marsh was in a full-length leg plaster cast and had to use a wheelchair for a month following the crash.

But he returned to United's Carrington training complex soon after to swim and begin his rehabilitation.

"The manager Sir Alex Ferguson was brilliant and told me I would get the very best treatment," Marsh added.

United's thank you donation to the Air Ambulance Service will go some way to keep their helicopter, which costs £750,000 a year to maintain, airborne.

Manchester United are to release three of their young players on June 30.

Goalkeepers Ben Williams and James Jowsey, plus striker Neil Wood will all leave Old Trafford after failing to break into the first-team picture.

Williams was on the bench for the opening five games of last season but this year was sent out on loan to Crewe, while Wood was an unused substitute for the Coca-Cola Cup defeat at West Brom in December.

Manchester United have won the Blue Stars/FIFA Youth Cup for the seventeenth time with a 4-3 win on penalties over FC Zurich.

The tournament, held in Switzerland, was celebrating its 50th anniversary. United won the trophy in its inaugral year in 1954.

However, this is the club's first triumph in the tournament since 1982.

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, Ben Collett, Ramon Calliste and Lee Martin scored the penalties to hand United victory after drawing 1-1 in normal time.

United looked to be heading to defeat after Zurich took the lead with just six minutes remaining. But David Poole popped up with the equaliser with two minutes to go.

16,000 fans attended the tournament over two days to watch the teams, made up of club's Under-19 squads.

United beat some tough opposition en route to the final; a 3-1 victory followed by draws against Besiktas (0-0) and Anderlecht (1-1) saw United needing to beat Barcelona to book a place in the final. The Reds duly beat the young Catalans 1-0 to set up a place in the final and subsequent victory.

Report by Ben Hibbs and Cliff Butler in Switzerland.

This is the first photographic record of Fabien Brandy and Danny Rowe I've ever seen on the web. But you'll have to guess who's who coz the tournament website listed the team by jersey number, not according to their position in the photo:

1. Luke Daniels, 2. Mathew Kendrick, 3. Alex Drinkwater, 4. Mitchell Booth, 5. James Chester, 6. Danny Rose, 7. Sam Hewson, 8. Kieran Lee, 9. Febian Brandy, 10. Nathan Hotte, 11. Jamie Mullen, 12. Richard Eckersley, 13. Chris Backhouse, 14. David Owens, 15. Danny Rowe, 16. Thomas Rowe, 17. Joe Heath, 18. Richard Chinn

Anyway, it is with some relief that I can confirm that Fabien Brandy and Danny Rowe EXISTS!

I also found the following blurb for Jamie Mullen on The FA website:
James Mullen - Manchester United
James is an attacking player at Old Trafford. Favouring his right side, he is another member of the England side to have featured in his club's Under-17s side.
But somebody put him down as a defender here.

Looking at the Under-15 team list, I also notice a few 'possible' younger brothers of older players - Eckersley, Rose, Heath?
Which got me thinking about the brothers who've been through United youth ranks - besides the most obvious Nevilles. Well I don't know for sure if they're brothers, I'm only going on their surnames - perhaps someone can confirm either way?:

Ronnie and Kyle Wallwork
Michael, Steven and George Clegg
David and Kirk Hilton
Stephen and Michael Rose
Dominic and Mark Studley
Jamie and Neil Wood

And there are some surnames like Johnson and Williams which are too common.

I started supporting United in the mid-80s, so my memory of United brothers before that is limited to prominent ones i.e. Jimmy and Brian Greenhoff (and the Astons, another much smaller category all together).

Trying to remember youth player names going back to the 80s, I had to pause to consider just how far Fergie has brought us. It's staggering just to think of the 'quality' of his first batch of fledglings circa 1987-88, which were really babes brought up under Ron Atkinson's tenure:

Nicky Wood, Derek Brazil, Tony Gill, Deiniol Graham, Paul Harvey, Denis Cronin...

Amongst the best of Atkinson's batch (and only Fergie gave them a chance) was... Mark Robins. Though Robins did score one of the most important goals in the club's HISTORY, he really wouldn't be able to secure a place in our reserve team line-up today. I'd take my chances with Cooper, Timm, Johnson, Ebanks-Blake and Calliste over Robins any day.

Gary Walsh deserves some credit, he was impressive in the first half of 1987-88 until his injury. Lee Sharpe doesn't count amongst this lot coz he was bought from Torquay by Fergie.

Some of the posters on this board seem to think that we can conjure a whole batch of world-class players from youth just like that, but thats nonsense if you consider just how long it took for Fergie to reform United's youth set-up until the system showed it could deliver results.

I'd put Sharpe and Giggs aside as they were as much the result of good scouting but it was Fergie's reformed youth infrastructure that produced our golden batch of Scholes, Beckham, the Nevilles, Gillespie etc.

Fergie started from scratch. He inherited from Atkinson a poor youth setup and big name players like Whiteside, McGrath and Robson who drank their way through training.

As compared to Wenger, who inherited a club with a long-established and admired youth setup, put in place by George Graham around the same time as Fergie took over at Old Trafford. Wenger also inherited Graham's entire defence, highly disciplined/committed warriors like Ray Parlour and even Bergkamp was served up on a plate by Bruce Rioch.

I'll end this thread on a little nod to Graham who created the solid foundations which allowed a good manager like Wenger to conveniently prosper, while lesser managers like O'Leary and Hoddle f*cked up the excellent youth groundwork he did at Leeds and Spurs. There was a time I even entertained the idea of Graham as heir to Fergie.
My son, Chris Backhouse is the smaller of the two keepers on the back row. The other keeper, Luke Daniels, is 6' 3". Chris has just finished the season as the U15 keeper. Unfortunately Luke was released but was signed by WBA and hopefully will go on to be an outstanding keeper. The squad in the picture is made up of U16 and U15 players.

The U15 players will know if they are going to get an apprenticeship at Man Utd in January. The U16's in the picture have already been either signed or like Luke Daniels, found other clubs.

Having seen Fabien Brandy play alot of times whilst supporting my son, I would agree that he has a phenominal talent. But I would also say that you've got to remember that these lads are still at school and have a long way to go.

E-mails or web forums suggesting that a player is going to be a big star could have a deterimental effect on a player. You've got to remember that the lads search the internet for their own names and when reading comments from others could lapse into the premise that they have already made it.

I know Fabien and his father quite well and I know that he is a very determined kid and, given the correct coaching, should make it but please be patient with these lads.

As for my lad Chris, I'm hoping that the he will be involved in the Milk cup in Ireland and the Youth team cup squad next season, probably as reserve to Lee Crockett who is a year older than him.

Well impressed with the win over Barca

Didn't they have the best youth side in Europe just a couple of seasons ago?

This lot seem tough. Like United ought to be.

Adam Eckersley - shaping up nicely.

Then we got clearity in the Mads Timm injury saga.

He picked up a hamstring injury May 12th against Lillestrom, and travelled back to Manchester for treatment, but when back one week after for further training. He might not be available for match on monday away to Stabekk, but he is in full training. He is just a bit easy on the shooting with the right foot (where he got his injury).

Mads Timm got an new injury setback on wednesday's training. He hasn't played since May 12th (against Lillestrom), and he is getting frustrated since ManU medical team said the injury was minor, but the Viking medicals day it will take time to heal the injury.

Viking will ask for an extention of the loan deal (beyond July 4th) for Mads Tim, but realize that the injury must be healed before a descission can be made.

It seemed to be too early for Mads Timm to play today. He wasn't even among the subtitutes.

A sad day for us Viking/ManU fans today. Viking has terminated the loan deal, and Mads Timm has returned to Denmark for a vacation before the pre-season training in ManU.

I enjoyed enery second of seeing him live, and think this was a wrong descission, but realize that Roy Hodgeson and the rest of the Viking management has a plan for the autumn.

As a summary of my observations, I think Mads Timm has a potential to be a first-team player of our beloved (english) club, but not before 2-3 years. He has extreme qualities that must be developed further, and I think he has the right attitude to handle a first-team action.

if true, that will be great for eddie and i think he has a genuine chance of featuring in the team.

is sporting in CL next season? or is that in portugal just the champions are in CL and the rest in europe? if they are in CL it would be great to see eddie play and see how well he is doing.

If I'm not mistaken they became third after Porto and Benfica. That means that they're playing in the Uefa Cup. BTW They changed their manager a couple of weeks ago...
