Yes, I am sure they know what they are doing, although reserve football can only get you so far and the Antwerp loans have worked well. I seem to recall a certain Preston loan move who worked not too bad.

I agree that there were far too few games for the reserves and also those who weren´t getting enough games for the first teams. It was especially bad for the goalkeepers. Jowsey hardly got a game, Williams few, it was almost a blessing in disguise (though it wasn´t) that two keepers were injured alot! Any news on Steele and his injury? Will he be ok for the start of the season?

We have alot of good youngsters coming through the system, from the FA-youth winning squad, the milk cup winning squad and all the way to the 9 year olds who seem to be very skilled! I guees that alot of players which aren´t progressing as well as the others need also to get games so they also are given a fair chance, but also aren´t blocking the way of younger more promising players.
I am glad that I am not the one to choose those who aren´t good enough and who are and then have to tell them!
It´s heartbreaking stuff but most important it is done!

My son has just received a form to fill in regarding the Milk Cup so hopefully there is a chance he may be considered for the squad.

I understand that Luke Steele is progressing towards fitness so hopefully he will be available for selection in the coming season.

The current U16 players are told in January whether or not they are to be retained as Apprentices by the club so it is an important year for them, especially as they also have their GCSE exams / coursework to add that little bit of extra pressure.

For those who are not kept by Man Utd there is always the chance of some other club coming in for them and offering them an apprenticeship

To all you Fabien Brandy fans...yes he is in the squad. My son Chris Backhouse cannot play as he was born Dec 1988 and the cut off is 1989 born players.

They are building temporary stands at the Carrington training ground for the fans. Get in there and support United

whom do u think will get the nod this time to step up from the reserves/youth team

i think richardson, spector and eagles deserve it

but there won't be space for the three of them

i think richardson should get a chance

he seemed to be getting into some form the last time he was playin, and it has been a long wait for him
i think this season will be his last oppurtunity

It certainly is make or break year for richardson, question is if he will make it. Does he have what it takes?
I would bet my money on spector when it comes to who will take the step up however it all could depened on which of them impresses SAF the most during the preseason.

He did. He was the driver who was unhurt whilst his passenger, Phil Marsh, was quite seriously injured. Broken leg amongst other injuries. Happily Phil is on the mend and hopefully will be back this coming season.

Great shame for Callum to be released. He's a big tall centre forward who looked talented on the few occasions that I saw him. hopefully he'll get picked up elsewhere.

Really good report !
But, can anyone in the youth team has the potential to become a star like CR7 or Rooney ?

Watched a little of the Hong Kong Sevens football event earlier on sky Sports 1 at 9am. Based upon the Rugby sevens, it is seven outfield players plus a keeper. From what I could tell, the United team included Eddie Johnson, David Fox, Chris Eagles, Mark Lynch, Colin Heath, Tom Heaton plus a couple of others I was unsure of. Anyway, we beat some team I have never heard of 2-0. We made it to the quarter finals which I presume is on tomorrow morning. Arsenal and Rangers are also in the competition.

We beat some Japanese team 1-0 in the quarters, playing Celtic in the semis.

It was crap though, the playing surface was unplayable.

Wilf Mcguiness on some of the manutd youngsters.

Now, we've still got great homegrown ones coming through - we've three terrific goalkeepers in Luke Steele, Tom Heaton and Tommy Lee. We have Lee Martin, David Jones, Richard Jones, Ryan Shawcross, Jonathon Evans and others who are good players with bright futures. Of course there's Jonathon Spector from America and he's showing a lot of promise. I'm sure he'll find a place. I think the future's great.

Does anybody know anything about richard jones, shawcross or jonathan evans? I know they exist but dont know what kind of players they are or their qualities/potential.

Richard or Richie Jones plays a central midfield role and is a similar player to David Jones, only younger. He is a local lad who made his reserve team debut in the last game of the season against Newcastle and did well. There could be a great future for him.

Sorry but im not familiar with the other two players. Maybe someone else can help you with them.

I think Richie Jones is a bit more defensive than David.

Shawcross is a larger than life defender. Usually center or left. He is welsh and played for the Welsh u-17.

Jonathan Evans played in the game before the last game of the u-19s season. I belive he was cought in red tape and couldn´t play earlier. He is Northen Irish as well as some other Utd lads at that agegroup. As well as Darren Gibson and perhaps Linford. He is a defender.
Does anyone know more about who Hopkins is? He played in the pen ultimate game for the u-17s and came on instead of nr 9.

Good news, as Eddie Johnson's off to Coventry on a season long loan! (link)

Sky Blues sign United striker

Peter Reid has signed his second Manchester United player of the summer, bringing in 19-year-old striker Eddie Johnson on a season long loan from the Old Trafford outfit.

Johnson – who has made one first team appearance for United, against Leeds in the Carling Cup last October – follows in the footsteps of midfielder Neil Wood who penned a two-year-deal with the Sky Blues last week

Despite a lack of experience Johnson achieved an impressive strike rate while on loan with Royal Antwerp in Belgium and can’t wait for next season to get underway when he hopes to help the Sky Blues to success.

"I’m definitely looking forward to it," said the England Under 20 international. "I think it will be good for me to get the experience and I’m going to class myself as a Coventry player for the season. My main aim is obviously to do well for myself but I want to do the best for Coventry as well and hopefully get them promoted or at least to the play-offs.

"I was on loan in Belgium with Royal Antwerp at the end of last season and I did okay there. I played eleven games and scored nine goals. The standard doesn’t touch our Premier League but it is quite high.

"I also played for the Man United reserves last season and I got a few games the season before last as well. All in all I’ve scored about 12 goals in 21 games for them."

Despite success at every level he has played at Johnson admits that making the next step at United is the hardest and realised he had to go elsewhere for games, although he has been told by Sir Alex Ferguson that the door remains open.

"The gaffer thought it would be a good idea for me to come and get some experience. I spoke to him at the end of last season when I came back from Antwerp and he still sees me in his plans but with the strikers they’ve got – Alan Smith, Ruud van Nistelrooy and Louis Saha –it’s difficult to slot in there. I’ve come here to gain my own experience, hopefully do well and take it back to United next year."

Johnson added that the fact Wood is here will help him settle and he can’t wait to gel with his new teammates on the pre-season tour of Germany.

"I know Woody really well and we get on. It’s given me somebody to help break the ice with the new lads. It’ll make it easier for me but they’ve all been great with me anyway and made me feel really welcome.

"I’ll join up with them for the Germany trip on Friday. I haven’t been able to do much at United because I’ve had tonsillitis for the last few weeks. I’ll be out there getting to know the lads and hopefully getting my fitness ready for the start of the season."

Johnny Evans is a strapping big lad. By all accounts United have bent over backwards to get him. Im told locally that he was bought a house for his parents by the club (though i dont know how much truth there is in that one)

Im also told that him and a few of the other lads all got huge signing on fees (at least for their age) when they signed their first professional contract. They rushed out and bought sports cars. Fergie found out and went mad. He ordered every one of them to take the cars back and get 'ordinary' cars. Good to see he's still got his finger on the pulse, even at that age.
