[quote=Jeffchin]Anyone has any latest update on Dong Fangzhuo? Is he still recovering from injury? Been out of action for almost 2 months! QUOTE]

Stop press: Dong will be back training with Antwerp as of today. He has been in Manchester getting treatment for injuries, variously reported as back and ankle. He played for the Chinese Youth team about four weeks ago in the Asian championships, scored once as sub. BTW, Antwerp are now in the second division, third in table.

Can't help you re Spector, buy I have a question. Is Ogushi Onyewu (known as Gooch?) in the squad? He's been looking really impressive for Standard Liege in recent weeks.

I hope Oguchi "Gooch" is in the squad. The guy is just a beast... 22 years old, 6'3, 210 lbs, good speed, good ball control, good vision for a central defender. They even move him to forward when they need offense. Apparently they bought him out from Metz for next to nothing. But the roster hasn't been released yet.
Gooch came and got his first cap in our last match and had his header headed into the net only to be redirected by a defender and called an own goal.

It's possible our coach Bruce Arena didn't call him in. Qualifying in CONCACAF goes through 3 stages. This is the final game of Stage 2 and the US already has enough points to advance to the final stage. So the game against Jamaica is "meaningless" for the USA - but can be used to give new/young players experience in international matches.

Gooch may be allowed to remain with Standard Liege because he is one of their main players and they can use him as they try to claw their way back up the table. I believe they are still fourth after their win over Anderlecht.

I was wondering about Spector only because he's not likely to see first team action before the Jamaica match on Wednesday. I like this kid... think he has a bright future. But right now, Gooch is better (and 4 years older).

Excellent, thanks for that. Just read that "Gooch" is heading for Jamaica as we "speak". No games in Belgium now until 27 November due to internationals and cup games. Standard Liege now equal third on points - five behind Anderlecht and 12 behind Club Brugge!

Supposedly there is an uncapped defender from England in camp...
While this could be 1 of 5 young Americans... I was guessing it was Spector.

If anyone knows if Jon is still in England... then Ill have to rethink...

Thanks.

he is off to the US football squad as darren fletcher mentioned it during the post match interview after the palace game!

Sylvan Ebanks-Blake stole the show with a hat-trick as the Reserves notched an impressive 4-1 win over Sunderland's second string at Altrincham.

Blake put the Reds two goals up inside half an hour, and Ricardo kept the lead in tact by pushing away a Neil Taggart penalty on 40 minutes.

Gerard Pique pushed United into a 3-0 lead just after half-time before Blake completed his treble on the hour mark.

Jack Wanless bagged a consolation for the visitors with a long-range strike five minutes from full-time.

United side: Ricardo, Picken, Lawrence (R Jones), Pique, McShane, Ngalula, Eagles, D Jones, Ebanks-Blake (Poole), Rossi, Heath (Collett).

Dong strikes again

Fangzhuo Dong came on as a sub and scored again on Sunday for Antwerp. Five goals in five sub appearances. It was his first match since September, injuries and Chinese representative matches. Souleymane Mamam also had a good game on the right wing - he's quick and he scored as well - and Antwerp won 3-1 at Union St. Gilles.

Table

1. Waregem 14 10 1 3 33 16 33
2. Antwerp 14 9 3 2 24 14 29
3. Geel 14 9 4 1 28 17 28

Next Saturday Antwerp play first division Beveren (Arsenal feeder club) in the cup.

Mista, do you think either Dong or Mamam have what it takes to make it at United? I must admit I don't know too much about them.

Do you think they are good enough to make it into United's reserve team should their work permits be granted? How old are they anyway?

Can't see any mention of this here yet, so...

Reds sink Magpies' second-string
Newcastle Res 0 Manchester Uited Res 3

Manchester United reserves followed in the footsteps of the seniors to complete a 24-hour double over the Magpies at rain soaked Kingston Park last night.

David Jones put the Reds into a 16th minute, following a mix-up in the Newcastle defence, and they were set for victory.

Colin Heath squeezed home the second goal from Kieran Richardson's left wing cross before the break and Giuseppe Rossi claimed the third in the 61st minute.

Paul McShane had a shot blocked on the line and Jones almost claimed a second goal but his shot thumped against an upright.

Newcastle's only worthwhile attempt on goal arrived on the half-hour, but Carl Finnigan pulled his shot wide.

UNITED: Heaton, Picken, Lawrence, Pique, McShane, Ngalula (Poole, 43), Heath, Jones D., Ebanks-Blake (Collett, 75), Rossi, Richardson (Hogg, 79).

Subs not used: Crockett, Howard.

Phil Bardsley

Good news, in the commentary of the last Reserves game, mr. Bowers said that Bardsley would soon be palying again after his injury before the season started.
I saw that Kyle Wallwork was a subsitute in the u-18 game against Man. City..... for City, so he has left us.

Not yet for either. Both are 19. To be reviewed end of season. Next two games are vital - cup vs. 1st division Beveren and then home game vs. leage div 2 leaders Waregem.

Antwerp lost 1-0 to first division Beveren on Saturday night. Antwerp were outclassed by their local rivals, who as usual featured 10 Ivory Coast players. While Antwerp are theoretiaclly MU's feeder club, Beveren have a similar link with Arsenal. One of Beveren's players Emmanuel Eboué (central defender) will join Arsenal during the transfer window. He played on Saturday but was hardly tested. As for United players: Souleymane Mamam played the 90 minutes on the right wing but did not tear up any trees, while Dong came on for the last 20 minutes and (for the first time this season) failed to score. It was a big ask for the Chinese striker who is struggling to regain full fitness after ankle and back injuries.

Next Saturday third-placed Antwerp meet second division league leaders Waregem.

10 Ivory Coast players!!!! And we call Arsenal French just for having 6 or 7 in the squad most of the time over the past few years.

Bit of background. Jean-Marc Guillou runs the show. He has an academy in Africa and he used to send his players to ASEC d’Abidjan. But he fell out with them and has now "taken over" Beveren to use the Ivory Coast players as a shop window. He is a close friend of Wenger. In reality, it's a conveyor belt for players coming from Ivory Coast. They regularly have 10 or 11 Ivory Coast players in the first team. They have already sold Yapi Yapo to Nantes, Yaya Touré (brother of Arsenal's Kolo) and Arsène Né to Metalurg Donetsk (Ukraine). Quite high fees for young players without many international caps - but they are class players. It's all a bit dodgy though as Beveren only see about 10% of fees. Even so, they managed to qualify for the UEFA Cup (runners-up in Belgian Cup).

Pique also scored the winning goal.

United youngsters see off Liverpool

Manchester United's Under 18's beat rivals Liverpool on Saturday, securing a 2-1 victory away from home.

Colin Gibson got the first for Francisco Filho's young charges on 22 minutes.

Spanish youngster Gerard Pique (pictured) then clinched victory over the Anfield Reds in the second half, scoring in the 78th minute to make it 2-0.

Liverpool grabbed a consolation strike in the last minute of the match through Danny Guthrie, but United had done enough to ensure the Reds returned home with all three points.

United team v Liverpool: Crockett, Simpson, Shawcross, Evans, Lea, Gray, Pique, Rose, Evans (Mullan, 73 mins), Gibson, Burns (K. Lee, 57 mins).
Subs not used: Puustinen, Campbell.

Pique one for the future

by TONY BUGBY

GERARD Pique, Manchester United’s 17-year-old central defender, is already being hailed as a star of the future.

And when Sir Alex Ferguson speaks publicly about the Spaniard’s potential he must be special.

Ferguson normally places a protective shield around his young players, but the former Barcelona junior appears to be an exception.

“Gerard has settled in well and we think he has a marvellous chance of making it,” explained Ferguson who recently handed Pique his first-team debut in the Carling Cup victory at Crewe.

Pique came on for the final quarter of the match, replacing John O’Shea in the centre of defence and showing a confidence and maturity beyond his years.

Ferguson explained that the Reds spotted Pique playing for Barcelona in a tournament in Spain. And because of a different transfer system in Spain - young players are not permitted to sign professional contracts - they were able to tempt him to Old Trafford.

Barcelona have evidently not given up hope of luring Pique back to the Nou Camp should things not work out.

Youth coach Fernando Segui was at Altrincham to watch Pique play for the reserves against Sunderland.

It was his second visit of the campaign and he believes Pique, who was in the same Barcelona youth team as Arsenal’s Franesc Fabregas, has the potential to become an even better player than Fernando Hierro, the former Real Madrid and Spain legend.

“I think Pique is a better footballer than Hierro in bringing the ball out of defence,” Segui told me.

Pique arrived quietly this summer along with Guiseppe Rossi, a 17-year-old striker signed from Italian club Parma.

Rossi has also tasted first-team action as he came on as a substitute in the dying minutes of the Carling Cup victory against Crystal Palace.

Reds See Off Toffees After Sticky Start

Barclays Reserve League North
United 3 Everton 1
Moss Lane, Altrincham

United's second string came from behind to record an impressive win over a young Everton reserve side at Moss Lane.

The Reds fell behind after just two minutes after a mistake by Jonathon Spector allowed the Victor Anichibi to finish past Tom Heaton.

After almost an entire half of pressure, the Reds finally drew level in sublime fashion. Chris Eagles played the ball to David Jones, whose exquisite backheeled return gave Eagles the chance to curl a first-time effort beautifully past Richard Wright.

A minute later, the Reds pulled clear of the visitors as David Poole nodded into the empty net after Wright had parried Kieran Richardson's powerful drive.

Just half time the result was put beyond doubt as Everton's Eddie Bosnar sliced a clearance into his own goal after good work down the left by Richardson.

Mark Howard conceded a late penalty with a handball, but found himself off the hook at Tom Heaton superbly parried Nick Chadwick's spot-kick.

United team: Heaton; Picken; Lawrence; Howard; Spector; Heath; Eagles; Jones; Ebanks-Blake; Poole; Richardson. Substitutes: Collett; Crockett; Hogg; Timm; Calliste.
