It's a game for sadists really, you really need to be a glutton for punishment because you will die, repeatadly. And when you do die you have to start right back at the beginning and try again with all the enemies respawned, it's like reading a book (in welsh) and getting slapped round the head and told to start again from the beginning of the chapter everytime you mispronounce a word.
Or people who grew up with the NES. You only had to play a game like Super Mario Bros. to do that. Nevermind Battletoads.

Funny, I read an article the other day which said that Dark Souls is really the spiritual successor to the NES Castlevania games.

Class selection.

There doesn't appear to be an obvious first timer choice, like there was in Demon's Souls (Royal). I plumped for the Knight, equipped with a ring which slowly recharges health.

Thief starts with a key that opens all minor locks. Deprived starts with a club, shield, and thong.

I'm interested to see how it will do on XB360.

Not sure. I have died three times so far. Twice at the first boss. I then killed him, walked 20 yards forward, hit the wrong button, and jumped backwards off a cliff. What a tool.

Played for about an hour so far.

This sounds tempting, but Skyrim, Uncharted 3 and skyward sword are on the horizon. I don't think there are enough hours in the day!

Died a few more times at the hands of fucking skeletons. I then found a Morning Star which makes them pretty easy. Still, I have been doing a lot of heroic running away, so far.

This is hard as fuck. One route? Giant skeleton. Another? Ghosts that kill the shit out of me. The next? A rather large armoured knight.

Right, an hour or so in now and the deaths are starting to stack up. The skeletons and ghosts are just brutal and they hunt you! You cant even leg it! So I'm going back to the path I started on - up the mountain.

Started as wanderer with witches ring (the apparantly useless description was too tempting to pass up)

It's tough alrite but I'm not wavering yet

You pretty much have no choice but to go up the mountain, to the castle. Any other way equates to death. That said, the castle is a nightmare, too, eventually.

Earlier I was poisoned (in the same place every time), and had to return to the nearest bonfire to be healed, this is no exaggeration, about 15 times. I will be dreaming about this shit tonight.

Should get this in the post tomorrow but out in the evening. I think playing it hungover will be a mistake. Will probably give Rage a go first.

I have made quite a bit of progress. Killed 4 boss demons so far. And still I haven't even scratched the surface.

If there is a better game than this released this year, it will be GOTY.

Just started it, chose to be a Pyromancer. Turns out the fireball spell was pretty effective against the big bastard with the club, the only problem was dodging him long enough so it could charge.

Just been very slowly making my way through the cemetery, then a huge skellington appeared and I legged it back to the bonfire. Looking very good so far, those first few skeletons hit me harder than i thought they would too. I can see tactical running away being a major thing for me.

That's the wrong way? Where's the right way?

I wish i could time parries properly, that could be quite useful.

Spoiler
Right i got past him and it opened a shortcut which is useful, now i'm gonna buy the key off the merchant and see if there's anything worth having behind the locked doors.

Spoiler
The red one in the village/castle area where he sits on the castle staring at you flaming the entire bridge. I ran down the stairs on the right and then kicked a set of ladders down for a shortcut.

No, but it would give you an indication of whether or not you have the temperament for it. It is hard as fuck, extremely unforgiving, and sadistically punishing.

That wasn't that far in i thought, i went straight up the stairs to the village after realising the cemetery was too tricky, killed a few goons and was at the bonfire. Then it was only a few more goons until the semi boss which i did alright with (thanks to the writing on the floor i beat him second time round, once i figured out what it meant) and then there's the dragon.

Funnily enough i've died more times at the hands of a pack of three rats than i have anywhere else so far!

About 2 hours in, did you go a different way?

To start with, yes. I tried the other two ways quite a few times. When I went up to the castle, I explored every bit of it I could find. I guess you missed the first black knight? Did you find the merchant? Those rats are the cunts that poisoned me about 15 times in a row.

By the way:

Spoiler
Before you come to those rats, shoot the dragon's tail about 20 times with arrows and you get a fuckin' uber sword.

Yeah i found the merchant again thanks to some writing and i killed the dark knight piece of piss, my fire spell did around 100 damage a piece to him so a few of those and down he went.

I don't have a bow or any arrows, might have to get one off said merchant.

Try to melee the cunt.

The Knight pick was not the most prudent, in my case.

I only melee goons, i love the little animation for when you attack someone from behind though. Very satisfying.
