Elder Scrolls V

Quote:
Bethesda has announced the release date of the Elder Scrolls V will be November 11, 2011..

The title will be a direct sequel to Oblivion and has been in development for two years. Bethesda is yet to confirm the platforms that Skyrim will be released on.

Skyrim has been seen in previous Elder Scrolls games, and is famous for being one of the most bitterly cold provinces in all of Tamriel.

Skyrim, also known as "The Throat", gets its nickname from the fact that it's directly north of "The Heartland", Cyrodiil.

The arctic province is largely populated by the hot-tempered race called the Nords who have become accustomed to the bitter winters.

Sweet. I spent so many hours on Oblivion with the expansions and general cave hunting, as well as the quests etc.

I can't handle this. ME3 and now this. I'm not taking my 360 to uni with me after Christmas. I'm going to leave it at home. I really want to pass my course, these two games will result in me stacking shelves at LIDL for the rest of my life, I know it. I've already avoided New Vegas. Must...stay...strong...

I think I am going to buy the GOTY edition of Oblivion. Someone tell me if The Shimmering Isles is good.

Lovely, played and enjoyed all the TES since daggerfall.

(Yes, that means I only missed the first one.)

I dunno, I have my doubts. Lets hope it's not further 'consoled' than Oblivion was.

Nick Breckon, community manager at Bethesda, has confirmed that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is running on an "all new" engine.

Posting on Twitter moments ago, Breckon said: "We can now confirm that the TES V: Skyrim engine is all-new. And it looks fantastic."

Also new engine?

Thank feck for that, that old engine was quite possibly the most glitchiest abomination known to man. Fallout New Vegas was the last straw I'm guessing.

Well, Bethesda happens to be known for the bugs in its games. I still remember the blue-screens-of-death I used to get while playing Daggerfall. My point is that I would expect bugs even with the new engine. I would still buy the game.

Interesting about the glitches with Bethesda talk. Oblivion and Fallout 3 run better (less crashing) on my computer than any other games I recently acquired.

Wasn't developed by Bethesda though was it? They only published it. Presumably they were working on this title instead.

Doesn't matter, they used the same engine for both the fallout games and Oblivion.

Get in! Lost mega time to these games over the years. Morrowind being my favourite by a long shot. Probably won't be able to dedicate much time to this one due to now having a life but I'm gonna bloody well try.

Oh and Shivering Isles is proper good, like. Definately a hark back to Morrowind by the devs.

Gone straight back to Oblivion after reading this thread. Never did more that 30 minutes of the actual story last time round even after putting 35 hours into it. Got to get it finished before this oen comes out.

I feel like going straight back to it, too. The GOTY edition should arrive today, but I have AC: Brotherhood to get out of the way first.

I hope to fuck that I haven't erased my Oblivion save data.

As promised the first Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim details have arrived via US retailer mag Game Informer.

According to the mag, the fifth instalment is set 200 years after Oblivion, taking place in a region north of the Imperial City (that's Skyrim) and as suggested in the debut teaser trailer Dragon's are returning to the world. Playing as 'Dragonborn', it's up to you and your mentor (voiced by Shutter Island's Max von Sydow) to defeat the wicked dragon god. Ooh-eer.

Of the many revamped systems in the game, levelling sounds like a particularly large one. Skyrim no longer has you opting for a class at the start of the game, instead granting the player extra points for either health, magicka or stamina upon levelling up. Each level is also hinted to gift perks, which are said to be similar to abilities in Fallout 3.

18 skills will feature in Skyrim, down from the 21 in Oblivion and 27 in Morrowind. Bethesda says it's attempting to accommodate players who want to specialise into a certain profession, such as mage or thief.

Those who still cringe at the dodgy-looking conversations in previous Bethesda RPGs will be pleased to know that dialogue exchanges now look more natural, with AI characters moving around a bit and carrying on with their business if you've interrupted them at work.

Quests are much more dynamic now than those of Oblivion, says Bethesda, plus determined on your character choices and player actions. Heavy magic users, for example, may be approached by a mage with a quest, and if you killed a shop owner his relatives will inherit the store, and heavilly resent you when offering a task.

The developer's also putting an emphasis on improving the game's combat, it's said, with more tactical assignment of weapon hands (for magic, shields or even dual wielding) and extra care put on how each weapons works and feels.

Good stuff. Skyrim's been given a release date of November 11, along with a debut teaser trailer which you can see here.

Here are a few more scraps of info, care of the NeoGAF forum:

Yet another recap:

-A variation of level scaling.
-Dynamic Shadows
-Overhauled Combat-system
-Improved Faces/Improved Models Example: Faces have been dramatically overhauled. Characters now exhibit more emotion show of distinctions between different races and just plain looks better.
-Radiant AI
-Updated Engine Snow falls dynamically (not as a basic texture on the ground)
Trees and branches move independently with the wind
Water flows
-Randomly generated quests.
-Beards
-You can't run backwards as fast as you do forward.
-10 races to choose from
-confirmed creatures: zombies, skeletons, trolls, giants, ice wraiths, giant spiders, dragons, wolves, horses Elk, mammoth, saber-toothed cats
-presumeably open cities (as dragons can attack)
-Hud-free first-person view and improved third-person perspective
-very unique landscapes! Also unique dungeons! In other words, lots of uniqueness!
-Character creation improved, body features customizable
-2-handed weapons and duel wielding confirmed.
-Finishing moves, unique to each weapon and enemy you fight.
-Sprint is added !
- Dialog will pop up when you approach an enemy
- cooking/farming/mining/woodcutting/blacksmithing
-18 skills.
-Perk picking at every level-up
-5 Magic Schools Destruction Alteration Conjuration Restoration Illusion
CVG

I want it now.

I hope so. That the monsters levelled with you was a bit of an annoyance for me. I mean what's the point in levelling up if the monsters scale with you?

Loved both Morrowind and Oblivion though (minor gripes aside).

Yeah that was shit. Fortunately there are PC mods that take care of that, but it was annoying having to mod the game so drastically like that just to get a better scaling system. Worth it though, immediately made the game infinitely more enjoyable
