Next update will probably only cover one season, so that I can align it up with the World Cups and European Championships, and maybe do a small separate update for those when the time comes.

Okay, I just started running the next season, and got through August. And I can confirm that I am no longer the most expensive or best paid player.

Great update niMic, delighted with how Mighty Boosh is progressing. Most top league appearances is a good sign in what looks like a very good Napoli side (finishing 2nd in Serie A the last few seasons). Hoping he makes the step up to one of the bigger sides in the next few updates

FM Experiment 2012: 2017-2018 (1/3)
Big Red - (Big Red)
It was a slightly disappointing season for Big Red at Real Madrid. After playing 15 games for the last season, only playing 9 the following season was not what he had in mind, scoring a couple of goals. 9 games wasn't even enough to gain him a winners medal as his club won the La Liga for the 4th time in a row, with a decent 102-13 in goal difference. He played a few more games for Ireland, but unfortunately they were not among the qualifiers for the 2018 World Cup. Buttered Scone - (FortBoyard) Buttered Scone had a pretty good second season at Espanyol. He played a part in 21 league games, which was the most he'd ever had at the top level, scoring 5 goals and providing 3 assists. Hardly spectacular, but he was still improving as a player. He had more luck for his national side, having now scored 8 goals in 16 appearances for Belarus, though unfortunately they had also failed to qualify for the upcoming World Cup. Captain Average - (Annihiliate Now!) Captain Average had a slightly strange season at Manchester United. The previous season had seen him play a part in a full 17 league games, yet only score three times and provide two assists. This season he equaled the scoring and assists numbers, with a better average rating, but only played 7 league games. His club won the league for the first time since 2013, but he didn't play enough for any real recognition. Holland had qualified for the World Cup, but he was yet to make his debut, and wouldn't make it now either, not having been chosen for the squad. Caspar Svensson - (Solius) In the space of one season, Caspar Svensson tripled the number of first team league appearances he had for Man Utd. He still only appeared 10 times in the league, but that was a big step up. The future looked bright, as his club now played a formation which employed both advanced wingers and an AMC. In addition, both Nani and Modric were getting older, and Modric was being released at the end of the season. Still, Svensson wouldn't get to play World Cup football either, as Sweden failed to qualify. Cinadine Cidane - (Cina) The past two seasons had seen Cinadine Cidane's star in the Aston Villa first team rise, and 17/18 was no different. He played 31 league games, most of them as a right winger, helping his club with 6 goals and 8 assists. That was crucial in helping his previously 7th placed club finish 2nd in the league, not to mention winning the FA Cup. Cidane had now played 52 Irish U21 caps, but no full caps. Though, they weren't going to the World Cup anyway. Cunty McFlange - (Alwyn) Having had a fairly poor spell on loan at Reading, Cunty McFlange was brought home for the entirety of 17/18, where he still only got to play a single league games, where he provided an assists, no less. Nor was he to appear at the World Cup, as his lack of first team action had seen him bypassed by England manager Mike Phelan. Not a good season for Cunty. DouLou - (DouLou) DouLou had a good season. A very good season. Not only did he play 35 league games for Chelsea, nearly doubling the total tally of league appearances for any club, but he scored 14 goals from the attacking midfielder position, which more than doubled his total goals tally. Overall, he had an average rating of 7.42, which made him the highest performing player at Chelsea by some way. For some reason he didn't play in the FA Cup final, which his team lost, though he was very tired by now. DouLou was still inexplicably retired from international football. He was, however, selected in the Premier League Players' Team of the Year, and finished second to Jack Wilshere for the Players' Player of the Year. |

FM Experiment 2012: 2017-2018 (2/3)
Elmo - (cj4 elmo)
Having helped Frankfurt gaining promotion in the previous season, he didn't find it so easy gaining first team appearances now that they were back in the Bundesliga. He played only 6 league games, providing not a single goal or assists, and a fairly poor average rating of 6.30. He was only injured once for the season, though that damaged achilles tendon did keep him out for a full three months. Japan had qualified for the World Cup, but Elmo wasn't part of the squad, despite the squad not actually being 23 players big. Emile Messi - (x42bn6) Emile Messi had another good season at Tottenham. His club didn't fare as well, finishing 6th, after having won the league only a couple of seasons past. Messi played 21 league games, scoring 7 goals and helping his teammates with 5 assists (and 5 yellow cards). Messi had achieved a single cap for England, but that apparently wasn't enough to gain him a spot in his nations World Cup squad. Perhaps Messi wasn't a footballer after all. Then again, some of his originally terrible stats were almost looking decent. Joe Bloggs - (Wayne Rooney) It was yet another fairly uneventful season for Joe Bloggs, as he yet again failed to make much an impression on the Arsenal first team. At least he played four league games this season, three more than the previous, and scored his first league goal for Arsenal. Bloggs made it into the Welsh national team on three occasions, but that wasn't enough to earn him a call-up for their World Cup squad. He also started the Champions League final vs Barcelona, but was brought off after only 48 minutes, in a penalty loss. Karan Mittal - (KM) Making the move to Real Sociedad had turned out to be one of Karan Mittal's better decisions. He played even more league games than the two previous season, scoring twice and providing 6 assists in 35 league appearances, helping his club go from 17th and nearly relegation the season before, to 7th and Europa League play. It was also enough to gain him a spot in England's World Cup squad for 2018, which proved that playing often and well was more important than playing for the biggest clubs. At the end of the season Mittal finished 3rd in the La Liga Young Player of the Year award. Mark Elstob - (Stobzilla) After a shaky season back at Wolves after being loaned to Getafe, Mark Elstob was hoping for more first team opportunities. And he got them, just not as many as he had wished for. He played 13 league games; still more than he had done since being on loan at Preston 4 seasons ago. Truth be told, he was featuring more for the reserves than the first team, and the club tried to loan him out. His contract lasted until 2019, but it would remain to be seen if he would stay there that long. No surprise that he didn't make the World Cup call-up, barely getting played at Wolves. Masal Bugduv - (Mr Anderson) Masal Bugduv had another very good season at Manchester United, better in some ways. He played less, 21 league games against 36 last season, no doubt because of a three month lay-off due to a torn calf muscle, but when he did play he was good. In 21 league games he helped his club with a single goal and five assists. Happily, 21 was well enough to gain the medal as Man Utd won the league for the first time in several seasons. No doubt Masal Bugduv would be chosen for the Irish World Cup squad, if only Ireland had made it that far. Mighty Boosh - (Mighty Boosh) Mighty Boosh was already doing quite well for himself, but 2017/18 changed everything. Before the season even started he became the most expensive player as Real Madrid came in with a Ł43 million bid, as well as the best paid player, making a fair Ł190k per week, with another Ł19,250k just to play. He then helped Real Madrid to yet another La Liga title with 3 goals and 7 assists in 28 matches. No surprise, then, that he was the runner up for the Young Player of the Year award. Unfortunately Switzerland also failed to make it to the World Cup. |

FM Experiment 2012: 2017-2018 (3/3)
Minkaro - (Minkaro)
Minkaro.. well, Minkaro was trucking along. Still at Birmingham, making this his 7th season at the club, he was once again shown a lot of faith. His play was hardly spectacular, but 10 goals and 4 assists in 35 league games, most of them as an attacking midfielder, was quite good for a club like Birmingham. Particularly one that finished two points shy of relegation. Minkaro then further proved that it was better to play in a small club than not play in a big one, as he was afforded a spot in the England team for the World Cup. Nimicinho - (niMic) Nimicinho wasn't the most well rounded player in the Premier League. He was a poor passer, an even worse crosser, and an atrocious defender. But he scored goals. A lot of goals. He matched his tally from the previous season, though admittedly in a few more games, as he scored 30 league goals in 38 matches. Again he just about failed to become the top scorer, as Rooney scored a disgusting 35 goals, but it, combined with the goals of the previous season, was enough to win him the European Golden Boot for 2017, with 32 goals in the calendar year. He also finished 3rd in the Premier League Players' Player of the year award, trailing DouLou. Paul Scones - (Leg-End) A good season was followed by another good season for midfielder Paul Scones. Again he played 32 league games for Zaragoza, scoring 9 goals and providing a single assist this time around. His club fell from 5th to a disappointing 11th, but the league was not foremost on Scones' mind in 2018. It was no surprise that he was chosen for the English World Cup squad, as he had featured even in the European Championship win two years earlier, but this time he would surely play a more central role. Twisted Woody - (Twisted Woody) Twisted Woody was, by now, a pretty good footballer. His only really stand-out quality was his speed, but he was also competent in all the important attributes for his position. Which was everywhere, as he played multiple games at right back, left back, right midfielder, left midfielder and left winger for his club, and all of the same except the last for his nation. And performed well too, with an excellent rating of 7.47 in 33 league games, that saw him notch up 3 goals and 9 assists. Versatile and talented, then, no surprise that he was chosen for the English World Cup squad. He was the best Arsenal player on the pitch as they lost the Champions League final on penalties against Barcelona, and he was chosen for the Premier League Players' Team of the Year, as well as 3rd placed in the English Players' Young Player of the Year. Tyrone Reaper - (Levo91) Tyrone Reaper had another fairly good season at Burnley, at least personally. He played 32 league games, scoring 8 goals from a midfield position. His club didn't fare as well, though, succumbing to relegation once more. Reaper had stayed loyal the last time that happened, but was unlikely to do the same this time around. It was publically known that he wanted to leave for a bigger club. He still had 3 years on his contract, but he wasn't likely to spend them at Burnley. He also failed to make the World Cup squad, which was disappointing for someone who had even featured (if marginally) in the Euro 2016 win. Walrus - (Walrus) Walrus, too, had another good season. This time both personally and with the club in mind. In 34 league games the midfielder scored none, again, but helped his teammates to six. And helped his club to a splendid 2nd finish in the Premier League, not to mention the FA Cup win over Chelsea, in a 2-0 win that saw Walrus seal the deal in the 68th minute. He didn't win any personal accolades, but an FA Cup trophy and the promise of European play next season should keep him satisfied. Not to mention his imminent appearance in the World Cup for England. Oh, and he was now making a pretty Ł89k p/w. Wayne King - (Urban-Ned) Wayne King was beginning to look like a damn good footballer. So good, that one wondered what he was doing at Fulham. He played 30 league games in 17/18, getting 3 goals and 6 assists, as his club finished in a mediocre 11th. With wages of Ł32k p/w, no trophies and his single personal accolade being a League 1 Young Player of the Month award from 2014, Wayne King wasn't exactly being rewarded for his talent and skills. He was also yet to make his national team debut, and as such wasn't anywhere near the World Cup squad. Maybe next time. Willy Goo - (Sw33t) Willy Goo was a slightly strange footballer. Lightning quick and strong both physically and mentally, his technically skills were decent at best. That didn't stop him from playing quite well, as he scored 13 goals in 33 league appearances for Aston Villa, most of them from the forward position. He was a large part of Aston Villa finishing 2nd in the league, and scored the 6th minute goal that got his club in position to beat Chelsea in the FA Cup final. No surprise, then, that he was chosen for the English World Cup squad. There he would seemingly partner Minkaro, another speedy striker, who just happened to play for arch-rivals Birmingham. |

This was a slightly smaller update, since it was just one season. I will keep doing two season updates, I just wanted to line it up with the Euro and World Cup.

Time permitting of course. Also, good update, Villa finishing 2nd which is pretty good, although I feel it is time for Walrus to move to one of the European Elite. Stats arent quite as high as I would hope at this stage I must admit. |
