Oh aye count the cop car in as well. And the motorbike as well, assuming you could not crash it for long enough to reach the top speed.

Yeah, the bikes were great, especially when you can find a big long road with a ramp at the end.

I think i'll have to download this now, haven't played it in years.

No, that was never the case.

There was debate over whether they would have blocked off bridges or not however.

Liberty City is by far the coolest of them, anyway. Although, I may be biased because I liked that it was the only modern one. The eighties (Vice City) and nineties (San Andreas) were utter shite.

Los Angeles (San Andreas) could have been brilliant if it didn't have the stupid nineties theme.

GTA IV review highlights - PS3 the better version?

So, the first review for this game has come and gone. Almost immediately after being posted, the site retracted the article, claiming they wanted to review the final version. We here at GameRevolver have a copy of this article, and we will share the highs and lows with you now.

*DISCLAIMER*
Please bare in mind that these are not the views of GameRevolver.com, nor that of RockStar Games. This is a review snippet from CGReviews.com, and is based on the preliminary version of the game. Once again, this review is based on an early version of the game, and does not necessarily represent the finished product.
*DISCLAIMER*

*this is the NOT the entire original post, yet clips of the highlights. For the entire interview, you will need to contact CGreview.com Comments in red are 360 specific, comments in blue are PS3 specific.

When speaking in general about the game, CGReviews, Cam Garish, simpley stated the following:

"Grand Theft Auto IV is a digital masterpiece. Period. You will like the Xbox 360 version of this game. You will like the PS3 version of this game. Technically, they are the same! However, there are some minor variations."

The review states that their is a mandatory, 10 min install on GTAIV for the PS3, and an optional install on the 360. The review also comments that the 360 version runs a bit choppy, with pop ins and frame rate issues without the install, although hardly noticeable. here is there quote:

"When popping the disc into the PS3 for the first time, you’ll have a brief installation. Don’t worry, it only takes ten minutes or so, and there’s a pleasant bit of GTA history trivia to keep you occupied. So, unlike with Devil May Cry, you’ll be able to eat your sandwich prior to playing the game. On the 360, this installation is optional if you have a hard drive. I advise to proceed with installation—it reduces the already minimal frame rate issues on the 360. When the game finally begins, you’ll be treated to the best opening credit sequence I’ve seen for a game in a long, long time."

STORY

As for the story, the article leaves this section nearly blank, wishing not to spoil any surprises, the only note being that the game has a much more indepth, and involved story than previous GTA installments.

GAME PLAY

There are numerous notes in this section, but since the game was not viewed in the finished form, we will cut this out as things may have changed. we will leave you with the following quotes:

The Good:"Vehicles are fantastic."
"The cover system is effective and easy to get used to."
" The squeaky car animation used when hookers do their thing is now accompanied by foggy windows—sweet."
"You can store your favorite vehicles in garages or parking spaces."

The Bad:
"The absence of the Dodo stinks."
"Going on rampages is now almost impossible."
"The ability to commit crimes is much more difficult."
"The 5-0 in GTA4 are smart, and they work really hard to bring you down."
"Euphoria didn’t do as much as I hoped."
"There will be one time moments of sheer bliss—and it’s worth every second."
"Riding in a Taxi is awesome."

CONTROLS

As seen on CGReviews.com:

"I preferred the PS3 controls because I’ve always played GTA on PS hardware. The controls aren’t identical to previous games, but the learning curve is really small. Most people will probably prefer the 360 controller, but that’s to be expected.

There were a couple minor things about the controls that bugged me. I’ll mention the single big thing: running. Tapping a button to run works well in theory, but I just know that the wear and tear on my controller has to be increasing exponentially. Still, it’s better than having fatigue in game, as how much you run literally depends on your fatigue in the real world. If you’re tired of tapping, you walk or take a cab. If the cops are on your tail, you muster up the energy to tap some more. All in all, it works as a concept…but it’s bitter-sweet. "

GRAPHICS

This is where things get interesting. We are sure that both versions of the game will be amazing, but the key points hit here are just enough push for us to say that even with a slew of DLC, the PS3 seems to be the better experience.

"The PS3 has a more relaxed color pallet, but this gives everything a more realistic look. If you don’t like the realistic look, and you have a HDMI connection, you can fiddle with your PS3 display settings and get it looking much more saturated. The textures are just as sharp as the 360 version, and there’s little to no pop-in or screen tearing. The PS3 takes longer to load than the 360, but I took several different head counts in game at different locations, and I always found the PS3 to be more populated than the 360. This could be attributed to the dynamic nature of the world, but it’s hard to tell. Either way, the difference was never more than five to seven pedestrians or three to four cars—it’s not really much of an advantage.

The 360 is bright. Boy is it bright. Based on discussion history, this one will be claimed to look better, but it’ll really be preference. The texture quality is the same on both systems, but the 360 has a more cartoon-like look. This isn’t a bad thing. It just depends on preference. I’d compare the difference to that of Oblivion on each system. The 360 also suffers from some frame rate drops that are almost non-existent on the PS3. Installing the 360 version on your system’s hard drive, however, will bring performance almost up to par with the PS3.

MULTIPLAYER

Another fun fact is in the multiplayer. While details are still very sketchy, The review specifically quotes the following:

"I know, you want details, but all I can confirm is split-screen on PS3 only. I was alone, so I didn’t actually get to have any matches, but I could tell that the split-screen worked really well. There was a significant decrease in the amount of traffic and pedestrians, but it didn’t ruin anything. This is understandable. Rendering two instances of Liberty City is a chore for any machine. I can’t conclude one way or the other why the split-screen mode was not available on 360, but I assume by the drop in on-screen objects on the PS3 that the 360 just couldn’t handle it. If you own a 360, don’t worry. You have Xbox Live…so you’re set."

So what have we learned from this article? Well, we learn that even after the complaints and issues Rockstar has had with developing on the PS3, the game is smoother, contains more on-screen action, color scheme is more ’real-to-life’ and Multiplayer is offered up split-screen on PS3 only. This is not to say that the game is bad on either system, rather, both versions are amazing. We will allow your imaginations to go to work now, dreaming up the coolest of cool thought about your next GTA venture.

As for the conclusion, we feel the review is/was incomplete, as did the reviewer, so we will not post their final score, although we will say it scored very high! Please stay tuned for GameRevolver.com’s debut review, to be posted at Midnight, April 29th!

He's finished Grand Theft Auto IV!

We talk to Rob Taylor from Xbox World, the first games writer to complete GTA IV

NO SPOILERS IN THIS ARTICLE!

With GTA IV due out on April 29 a few of our esteemed magazine friends in the GamesRadar network have been granted access to review the game already. That's right - one of the perks of being permanently slagged off on forums and two-bit blogs is that games writers get the opportunity to play games before they're in the shops.

The first of our colleagues to actaully finish the game is Rob Taylor, deputy editor of Xbox World 360 magazine, and below he tells us (as best he can) what it feels like to be the first person to finish GTA in the world. Lucky bastard.

You're the first games writer to have finished GTA IV, how does that feel?

Pretty darn sweet to be honest, I allowed myself a quick smug grin when the Rockstar guys told me! It's funny; I didn't actually really get to play as much as – say – the Benelux journos we met while up in Chelsea (we were based in Rockstar's actual offices and I think I racked up 25 hours at the final count, while they were ensconced in their hotel rooms playing up to 11 hours a day!) and I also had to write down some fairly comprehensive tips for the first batch of missions so actually I got off to a slow start.

On day two though, I flew through a major batch of the story missions without messing up once and then on the final day a Rockstar Page Ranking sidled up to me pretty late on while I was swearing my head off at getting stuck during a mission called 'A D*** B*** S**** C***' (edited to avoid spoiler) and said "Keep pushing on, you're actually nearly there. The missions are meant to be tough near the end!". It's true; the final couple of missions are rock, but after a couple of retries I finally made the breakthrough. And boy did I feel relieved; to have missed out that late on after all that, ahem... 'hard work' would have been hard to take.

How hard has it been to keep it all a secret?

Well, I've been threatened with physical violence more than a few times by mag colleagues after my constant stream of GTA enthusiasm threatened to get a bit too spoiler-intensive! Generally though, it'd be a shame to ruin the surprises for anyone else; GTA IV single player simply has to be played on your lonesome to be fully appreciate it for what it is: a true milestone in videogames. Likewise, my review in Xbox World 360 (out Wednesday 23rd April) talks more in general terms rather than getting into specifics... I can tell people why they have to buy this game, but I'd rather not tell them everything that transpires while doing so.

How did it all pan out then? Where did you play it?

So we got the call from Rockstar to come up on the March 26 and play for three straight days in a row – including a Saturday! We'd usually kick off at 9 or 10ish in the moring, play until 8 or 9 at night, then go eat, then crash before getting up the next morning and do it all over again. Sat in front of a 60" LCD screen in a dark room for nigh on 30 hours – now that's hardcore! Every GTA fan's dream though, huh?

How hard did you find it, playing it under so much pressure? Did you die a lot?

Definitely. It's funny, I actually had another colleague in the room with me, who also got real close to finishing. We were always comparing stats though, and I think I'd died 40-odd more times than he had by the end of the game. And failed, like, 50 missions! So I think in my rush to get through the game my skills let me down once or twice(!) The pressure to plough through as much as humanly possible did get irritating at times – especially when you get stuck on a certain mission – but you want to soak in as much atmosphere for your readers, cover as much ground as possible... all while taking over 4000 words worth of notes on a nearby laptop! It was the ultimate mix of fun and high pressure.

How different is the game from the others?

It's certainly tighter, both in terms of the way Liberty city is structured and the way in which the narrative feels more movie-like than before. Otherwise, everything feels as if it's been given the next-gen treatment; in particular the driving and shooting are light years ahead of past GTAs. Overall, it's a stratospheric leap forward, beyond anything I'd imagined.

Was the game everything you expected? Or are there some surprises?

That's a tricky question. It certainly exceeded my expectations, while there are so many small, chucklesome Easter Egg-style surprises that you're constantly shaking your head at just how savvy a developer Rockstar really is – light years ahead of its contemporaries. Again though, it's hard to be specific without venturing into the spoiler region... sorry!

In terms of the time it takes to finish, how does it compare with others in the series?

That's a hard question to answer really. I finished the story mode in 24 hours, without skipping cut scenes, but I literally blitzed through and hardly took on any side missions. If I was to play it again (which I will be, right on launch day!) I'd say to wrap up the story will take at least 40 hours at a normal pace, plus another – say, 25? – to wrap up the remainder of the missions. In truth though, you could be paving the streets of Liberty City in a year's time and still not have discovered everything. Plus, if you're a 360 owner, there's the promise of downloadable content to come...My advice is: just kick back, take your time and breathe every fresh sight and sound in, don't simply rush through just to finish it before your mates. I wish I'd had that optionI

How many "Woooaah, Jesus that's amazing!" moments did you have?

Without giving away any spoilers; lots! I think, overall though, it'll be three overall things that entrance GTA fans like never before. The City is one, with a lighting engine that has to be seen to be believed, plus the incredible dialogue and characterisation is genuinely Oscar-worthy and Niko Bellic is absolutely the most amazing protagonist in any game I've ever played. Finally, multiplayer of course!

Are the GTA fans going to happy with the new game, do you think?

Obviously, you can't make everyone happy all of the time but if any GTA fans aren't happy with IV, they need to take a good long look at themselves. Seriously though, this game is going to make a lot of people very happy.

Did you get a chance to play much multiplayer? Did you get your ass kicked by the Rockstar guys?

Yes, Xbox World 360 actually snagged a whole day playing against Rockstar PRs and devs in a exclusive feature a month or so back. Rather than simply go with the whole Deathmatch and Capture the Flag stuff, they've genuinely taken their time creating some amazing new modes that'll do the business online. Mafiya (a chaotic, mission based affair), Cops 'n' Crooks (one team try to capture the other) and Hangman's Noose (players team up to take an army of AI SWAT troops) were our personal faves...

If you had to pick a favourite out of all the games in the series now which one would it be?

GTA IV. By a country mile. It craps on all the others – even the mighty Vice City – from a height equivalent to the Statue of Happiness. Believe me, GTA IV is even better than the hype suggests!
Can't wait!!!!

It has been said by developers many times before the potential of the PS3 is huge, and graphics will only get better as the developers learn to fully utilize the PS3, so it doesn't surprise me really.

Didn't have to pay a penny

It was in Game, they gave me a special envelope with a gift card, and if I traded in games they would give me an extra 10% towards GTA4
