HBO Cancels...

How to make it in America, Bored to Death and Hung

Quote:
HBO yanks 'Hung' and 'Bored to Death,' picks up 'Enlightened'
by Lynette Rice

So long Hung, Bored to Death, and How To Make It in America!

HBO has canceled the sleeper comedies to make way for more fresh programming coming down the pipeline. Hung and Bored each ran for three seasons, and America ran for two.

In the meantime, the pay cabler ordered a second season of Enlightened, the Laura Dern starrer that just earned Golden Globe nods for best TV series (comedy/musical) and for best actress.

In 2012, HBO will roll out Luck, a new drama from Michael Mann and David Milch that stars Dustin Hoffman; as well as Aaron Sorkin’s series about life behind the scenes of a cable-news show. The network will also premiere Veep, starring Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Girls, Life’s Too Short, and Angry Boys.

Angry Boys? It'd be nice if they picked up Community. I'm looking forward to Veep though, for those who don't know what it is, it's the American adaption of The Thick Of It and Armando Ianucci has managed to keep the creative reins on it in this incarnation so I have a feeling it will be very good.

Veep is the new Iannucci. Sounds like a US version of The Thick of It.

If Angry boys is what I think it is, be prepared for some shit comedy by Australian Chris Lilly.

His first work was funny, he's second less so, the third 'Angry Boys' was just utter shite.

It is. HBO jointly produced the series.

I didn't see it all but it was good in bits but overall nowhere near as good as Summer Heights High. I may like SHH more because I'm a teacher but I though it was significantly better than We Can Be Heroes. I think the fact that Chris Lilley used to be a teacher gave an authenticity to the comedy missing in his other work.

Watched all three, and can see why all three were cancelled.

HTMIIA was great, really picked up this season and probably the one I will missed the most, Bored to Death was also pretty good with Zack Galifianakis and Danson, HUNG, I felt had the most potential, had an interesting plotline, but didnt live up to them, plus the characters/actors were quite shit.

Bummer about Bored to Death. The scenes between Ted Dansen and Zack Galifinakis were usually very funny.

They've gotten a lot of their schedule this past year(Entourage already done and Eastbound confirmed final season coming up, Big Love ending last year) for all the potential brilliance they have set up, GoT/Boardwalk was simply just ushering in a new era on dominance for HBO......Ianucci and Sorkin are brilliant writers, Luck has all the elements to make it and they have plenty up their sleeves as well.

Hung sucked anyway, Bored to Death was a neat little show and they gave it a decent run.

I still haven't forgiven them for cancelling one of the greatest series ever, Carnivale.

Just watched the pilot for that Luck and have to say it was fantastic. It has the verbal pace of the westwing in parts, fantastic cinematography and the preview of what the season promises looks incredible.

Bored to Death was good

That Enlightened is a load of wank. I watched the first 6 episodes and cant carry on with it any further. I didnt like the lead actress in her movie career and her character in this is beyond annoying. I appreciate that the whole point of the show is that she's trying her hardest to become 'self-aware' and to 'help others', but is oblivious to how much of a twat she is, but the whole thing just bores me rigid.

Not a patch on Summer Heights High. Have you seen that? Maybe it is because I'm a teacher but I liked it a great deal.

I can't respect a man that likes Angry Boys.

It's appalling.

Chris Liley needs another trick. Something that isn't race/class humour.

I think Angry Boys would seem better if you hadn't seen his other stuff because it wouldn't seem like more of the same old same old.

The two shows that got cut short I really felt bad about were Rome and Deadwood.

The annoying thing is that HBO themselves admitted that if they'd considered how good the DVD sales of Rome could potentially have been they never would've cancelled it. Instead they just saw the ratings vs the budget and did.

Ratings are so pointless, if they know it's good people will buy it on dvd later.
