I think she is a genius, in the way she successfully promote her brand in such a short period of time with her meteoric rise of fame.

Obviously she was heavily influenced by other pop icons and fashion ideas, and she is all about resemblance of style and fashion, without any original sense of style. But to me it doesn't really matter, and she doesn't have to be original in that sense. Even Michael Jackson borrows moonwalk from someone else and made it his signatory move. So to be fair with it, she only needs to popularize whatever she borrows from, that's all the pop industry is all about.

She was obviously always a very talented girl (as the vid above shows) but talent doesn't get you very far. I saw an interview she did somewhere, and when asked what the best piece of advice she's been given was, she said "it isn't about people knowing who you are, it's that they want to know who you are". She obviously took that advice and it's worked - clever girl.

I do wonder if it's all a big act though.

Yep, whether you like her music or not, you can't deny she's been very very successful at branding herself and selling that brand

That's not a music video, there's no music in it and the soundtrack is pretty much irrelevant to the 'performance' which is just cliched humourless shit.
