Newsgroups

I consider myself decent with all things technical, but newsgroups are on another level!

Does anyone use them? Whats the cheapest newsgroup that does unlimited dl, and lets you pay with paypal or maestro? Also is it really worth it?

Guide to using newsgroups.

First off you'll never use torrents again if you get yourself into newsgroups, they are, plain and simple, the dogs dangleys. I have a 20mb connection and I average download speeds of between 15mb to 18mb most of the time, it obviously drops and rises as to the traffic using your bandwidth, but you will use the entire bandwidth available on your connection at that time with this service.

First off you need a news provider. The best one is Giganews and has the best retention of 200 days, which means you can download binaries (the term used for the movies, music, apps etc that you can download) that have been posted up to 200 days old.

http://www.giganews.com/

The costs involved depend on your download requirements. There are others out there if you search for newsgroup provider and you may find a cheaper option that suits your requirements better, but the service that Giganews provides is top notch and well worth the expense if you download a lot.

Next you need a download client like you would use for downloading torrents, I use Grabit:

http://www.shemes.com/

It's a free licence and works just fine. If you want to pay you can use Newsleecher:

http://www.newsleecher.com/

To be honest though from my experience Grabit works just fine, so I see no reason to pay for one.

Lastly you need to register with a site that catalogues all the binaries into a nice convienient layout for you to simply click and start downloading. I mainly use NZBMatrix:

http://nzbmatrix.com/index.php

This is a great site and is free for a limited service, you will get limited retention though so I would suggest making the one off donation to the site, it was $8 when I signed up, and then you get the full 200 days retention that Giganews also provides.

Another good one is Newzbin

http://v3.newzbin.com/

This one probably has more content than NZBMatrix, but isn't as well laid out for my liking and you have to pay a small amout for the use, but this can be done instantly whenever you see something you want to download from there that maybe isn't on Matrix (rare), by buying credit for a certain period of time.

That's it.

Once you have signed up to your newsprovider, Giganews for example, you will be given your account details, host address and password which you then input into your Client (Grabit or Newsleecher) and away you go.

I can give you more detailed help if the need arises on the setup, but it is fairly straight forward really so I see no real issues.

I've never looked back since my mate introduced me to this service.

Hope this is of some help, if you need any further help just give me a yell.

Not really sure what that is, I'm on the Platinum service, so unlimited downloads and no SSL. If you want unlimited go for that imo.

SSL is a type of encryption so it is far safer to have it although newgroups in general are the safest anyway I believe.

Newsgroups are much much quicker. But if I was getting rapidshare for free (you porn Baron) I would probably use them.

Never had a problem without it so far.

Never had a virus through it either or any type of malware.

It is by far the safest form of downloading on the net for me.

ive got a slow connection and i download at a speed of 80kb/sec thourgh the normal browser but i get speeds of 300 kb/sec through rapidshare...i suggest if you use rapidshare then use it with internet download manager as it increases its speed more.

its way faster than the free one.

I'm on 20mb and get about 23mb download speeds most of the time (traffic shaping kills me).

Newsgroups will use the full capability of your speed i'm not sure whether rapidshare will.

Is that your full bandwidth or is that what Rapidshare cap you at.

For instance would I get 2000kb/s from Rapidshare as I do on Newsgroups?

The question still stands though, which is, does Radipshare allow full use of your download speed supplied by your ISP?
