A question for people like Weaste

Right, so I have a 720p tv which I have my Xbox connected to. So I go to change the display to from SD to HD and I see that it will let me run at 1080i, which is strange because my tv's definition is 720p not 1080i. I'v been running at the supposed 1080i for a few weeks and was thinking would it be better to run it at 720p since that is what my tv is buit for?

So to cut it short my question is should I keep it running at 1080i or change it to 720p?

Cheers

There is no benefit for you running at 1080i, in fact it's worse. 1080i is only really meant for old CRT HDTV sets as raster displays interlace. What your TV is actually doing is either

A) Buffering the input, producing a 1080p display every two frames, and then scaling this down to a 720p display.

B) Trying to mimic a raster display (in which case you should see massive black bars at the top and bottom of the display, as well as a lot of blurring I would guess.

Broadcast HD still uses 1080i as it's half the data to transmit per second and per frame, and it's only 25/30 frames per second (1 half frame every 50/60th of a second) 25/30 times a second.

Stick with 720p.

probably going to get this wrong but,

most xbox games are only produced in 720p so running them in 1080i will not make any improvement

Correct, all the XBox is doing most of the time is upscaling the output to 1080, interlacing it, and then having the TV downscale and deinterlace it again or trying to display it as interlaced.
