I'm just getting into them right now. Ole can you recommend the better films of Godard and Truffaut. I have only seen Breathless (A Bout de Souffle) by Godard and Fahrenheit 451 by Truffaut. What else should I put on the top of my list ?

I've noticed that you can't get through a conversation about the French New wave without the J-word coming up a million times.

Hiroshima mon amour - well worth a watch.

I loved Fahrenheit 451, but couldn't really get into Godard's work, sadly.

Godard is the most experimental so keep that in mind. His movies:
Contempt
Band of Outsiders
A Woman is a Woman
Masculin Feminin
Alphaville
Le Petit Soldat
I'd recommend watching Band of Outsiders or Contempt first, those are the most conventional.

Truffaut is good, but I prefer Godard. Truffaut's movies:
Jules and Jim
Shoot the Piano Player
400 Blows(really the whole Antoine Doinel series)

Also check out some movies by Eric Rohmer. They are very slow though. A lot of talking. That should get you started.

Shame you couldn't get into Godard's work. He's my favorite director.

Ordering of the scenes, parallel plotlines?

Even when it is the most appropriate phrase it conjours up images of pseuds discussing minute of plot in detail on late night public service TV. Which makes me want to engage in an axe wielding homicidal rampage.

Sorry.

Had a mini Brigette Bardot marathon last night.

Naughty Girl- It certainly felt like a silent picture. Chase scenes are zany with strange music and a all inclusive fight in the end. Overall, not that good.

Come Dance With Me- The better of the two movies. Though it is completely impossible that this could ever happen, it's somewhat interesting. Bardot looks amazing in it. Also, it was interesting that it was made in 59 and dealt with homosexuality and transvestites.

Water Lilies (Naissance de pieuvres). No shootings, car chases, porno shags or bombastic overacting and only runs for 85 minutes. Despite this, a very watchable film nominally about synchronised swimming but actually about what it’s like to be a 15-year-old girl (directed by a woman so forget it voyeurs).

The Orphanage was a decent watch, not particularly scary, though but it was well paced and touching at times. Thankfully it didn't go down the route of yet another exorcism film.

I agree, fantastic film. I think the whole cast was superb. Proof that you don't need brilliant locations, loads of action and a silly twist at the end.

Just got Dr Strangelove, Spirited Away and A Wes Anderson box set arrive in the post this morning, although everyone already knows about them the verdicts will be returned over the coming days.

Going to watch the Orphanage tonight I think and I thought Cloverfield was ok but i suppose it depends on what you are expecting.

Have you seen Juno? I thought that was an overrated pile of shite.

Where have you been by the way?
Seen those films then?

I actually watched Rushmore and Royal Tenembaums last night. Theyre both really good if you like Wes Anderson. I got them on the basis of watching the Darjeeling limited and thinking that no-one else makes films like that. Theyre funny without trying too hard, and kind of tragic and uplifting at the same time. Very difficult to put your finger on.

The girlfriend wants to watch Spirited Away with me as we just watched Howl's Moving Castle, which was excellent.

Stranglove, I have to watch with my housemates.

I have seen some others recently but can't remember them right now.

Have you seen the Orphanage? I love Del Torro's spanish films and this looks great, especially with him as producer.

I have seen Dr. Strangelove. George C. Scott is great there.

On the other side, I have seen Sweeney Todd yesterday. Someone should have told me that Johny Depp is going to sing there.

Strangelove is my favorite movie of all time.

I have seen three stinkers in a row now and I knew they were going to be like that but I still watched them.

National Treasure 2, Me, you and Dupree and The heartbreak kid.

Good film, well worth a watch. As for Spirited Away, I think it's probably the best anime ever.

Spoons, watch Wages of Fear if you haven't seen it already. Saw it last month and I felt like I did after watching Come and See, blown away.

I love Anderson's movies. I agree that there's just something that you can't explain about them. Also, his soundtracks are usually spot on. The Kinks, The Zombies, David Bowie, all good stuff. Have you seen The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou yet?

The Prestige. Really good movie except for the ending in my opinion. Seemed like there was one too many cases of "aha, you've been had, I one upped you".

I pretty liked the ending. There is nothing better than surprising ending.

I agree. I thought it was a decent watch, but vastly overrated. . .and as you said, they tried too hard.
